Biography
|
Nobody quite remembers the day Sorrow arrived. It was uncharacteristically humid for the arid sandbanks of Ala Ghanna, yet the village was gripped by a deathly chill. Three more children lost to the Imperials. The propaganda was becoming harder and harder to resist - as supplies waned, their numbers flourished, and the village was struggling to get by on the labour of their elders alone.
Maybe that's why. The arrival of yet another refugee was nothing compared to the constant, persistant loss that pervaded day-to-day life. Another mouth to feed was hardly cause for celebration. No-one could even recall who had lived there before, just that where there was once a space, now there was Sorrow. Before long everyone knew their name. Although not one of them could recall an introduction, formal or otherwise. They just... Knew. That's how it started, and so did it continue. It wasn't a malicious amnesia by any means, just that they simultaneously looked strange and exactly how you'd expect them to. Their accent was non-descript : it was foreign to Gyr Abania, but not at all out of the ordinary. Depending on the day their tail hung low to the ground with long, lethargic sweeps. Others it appeared short, fluffed and wagged energetically. Words rolled off their tongue like sand in an hourglass, and each conversation passed so swiftly it was as though it never occurred at all. But it did occur, for townsfolk who made themselves known to Sorrow seemed somehow brighter for it. Luck in the village was beginning to turn. A formerly written-off mining shaft collapsed, and not only did every worker make it out unscathed, newly uncovered veins glimmered promisingly in the low, afternoon sun. Recruits returned to the village - battered and bruised, but alive. Crops persisted where once they had withered, and the water seldom ran dry. Nobody connected it to Sorrow, of course. Why would they? But as the year drew long and Imperial patrols grew increasingly thin, villagers ensured to give them a wide smile and a nod of thanks each time they passed. The general consensus is that it doesn't really matter when Sorrow arrived, or how they settled. What matters is they're here, and that the people of Ala Ghanna wouldn't have it any other way.
