A Story of Smoke and Starlight

Amongst the ruins of the world that once was, a dragon and her hatchling are running.
Ashes whirl down upon them, amid the sparks and raining plumes of molten rock. They struggle onwards, the hatchling not knowing the way but following in blind loyalty, a dirty rag pressed tight to her mouth to stop her breathing in the strange golden smoke. Despite her weak movements and sickly pallor, her mother pulls her along with urgency. The Peacebreaker will destroy them all.

They find the tunnel. A small open mouth, obscured by ivy, only just wide enough to fit them both through. It is the only way to the centre of the Heartlands and down they must go, spiralling down the steps so ancient they unnervingly seem to predate even the age of dragons.

They head down for what feels like eternity until they reach the chamber. A blackened heart-shaped flower is beating weakly in the earthen wall, the roots feeding in to it like veins are beginning to blacken too.
The mother begins to weep.
She crouches down to her daughter, wiping the grey ash from her eyes and nuzzling her face.
"I have to go now." she chokes out.
"It's okay, mother" the hatchlings says, entwining her tiny claws with hers.
Her mother reaches to hold her when suddenly she darts away and with a quick motion rips the heart from it's roots.
Before her mother can even react, the ground shakes violently - knocking her off her feet.

The entire earth is screaming.

"Don't-" she cries, only to get a mouthful of soil as the ground itself shudders and howls with pain.
But then quite suddenly.. it stops.
She looks up.
In the wall where the heart once beat, stands her daughter. Eyes closed. Pale. Roots piercing her chest.

And suddenly, in quietness of the dead world, a song is being sung

"And it went, la la la la la la la la la la
la la la la la la la...."
