The common superstition is that it's bad luck to look at, touch, move, or sell a canopic jar. Well, Palan doesn't believe in any of that nonsense. After deciding to disprove this superstition -- by keeping a canopic jar among their possessions at all times -- they've made it their life goal to combat misconceptions and belief in ghosts.
Palan will never admit the jar is causing any sort of misfortune, even though anyone who meets them would describe them as extremely unlucky. It looks like every plan they make comes crashing down, and seemingly innocuous items can turn deadly in Palan's paws. Think of the clumsiest person you've ever met and multiply that by a thousand, and you'll get this dragon. Palan is very much a hazard to the caravan, but the members of it pretty much raised them and love them dearly so they'll never be pushed out. The caravan leader (Ivine) just has to account for three or four unmitigated disasters per day.
Palan is brilliant and charming, which kinda? balances out their terrible luck... but what is personality in the face of ancestral rage? The canopic jar has been with Palan for many years, and when they're feeling lonely they'll talk to the jar. After those times, Palan's luck seems to be a bit better (though they don't accept the notion of luck and thus would never notice). Sometimes it seems to them the jar talks back, but they just chalk it up to their sleep deprived mind playing tricks on them.

But I mean... perhaps the ghost (which definitely doesn't exist) in the jar (which is definitely not cursed) just wants a friend.
