Backstory

Whitley’s always been a quiet one, but he’s stronger than he lets on. Stronger than he has any right to be. Born blind to a family of high-ranking garlean officials, they saw his disability as a detriment to the family’s status and future, leading to his abandonment at a young age. Caecus, they named him, before dropping him of at an orphanage, never to look back. A name like a brand, reminding those who spoke of him about his permanent condition. It’s no wonder he dropped that moniker in favor of his own chosen name after being busted out of Garlemald by his only friend who was like a brother to him, Nik. Eventually, he ended up landing in Gridania, picking up and learning how to shoot a bow with exact precision, dabbling in falconry, and experimenting with conjury. Pretty unsuspecting of a Garlean, right? You’ve likely never seen Whitley without his signature mask— a standard in Gridanian wood-wailer gear, if not for its golden sheen— unless you’re one of the very few people he entrusts with his tragic secrets.

Whitley is a Garlean, born blind and orphaned at a young age by parents who didn't want him. He was conscripted by his new parents, and due to dissent, experimented on by Garlean scientists. His sacrifice sparked the light of Hydaelyn, who gave him the ability to see through aethersight, along with the power to manipulate aether. He escaped Garlemald with his brother, and now lives in Gridania. His partner and him are bards!
