Oftentimes, Elena thought if anyone else had attempted to offer the same information Kalina did that fateful night, she would have never believed them. She, in all of her likelihoods, would have probably turned tail and walked right back out of the clan in search of another more stable, less fanatically aligned colony. She’d seen far too much of what blind devotion could do to someone and had, at some point though perhaps not officially, vowed to never get involved in things like that.

Oh, but then it was Kalina.

She’d seen great rituals dedicated to the Arcanist, ones that spanned nights and days and nights again with dragons from every Flight pitching in to scream their faith to the skies. Elena had witnessed firsthand the aftermath of such riotous festivals and knew just how drained and utterly lifeless it made those participants; oftentimes the majority of those rituals ended with countless fields teeming with sagging, hoarse dragons barely clinging to consciousness, digging their claws into the undulating earth in a pitiful attempt to drag themselves home.

It seemed odd at the very least that one born into the Arcane flight such as she, one with such a strong connection to such divine rituals, would actively turn her back and flee from her family to find seclusion in the Shadow Flight. It wasn’t entirely a well-thought out plan, but somewhere in the back of her mind Elena thought the damp musk of the Tangled Wood would blot out the skies high above.

It wasn’t until Kalina had softly, gently coaxed her out of her momentary fright and led her toward a mushroom-filled grove, just the two of them and the soft chitter of unknown insects slinking nearby, that Elena understood there were different methods of divinity.

The grove was private. It was small enough that Elena had to sit close to the imperial to avoid snagging her feathers on the gnarled thorns of nearby bushes, and she found an everlasting, ephemeral peace in the silence that ensued as Kalina called upon her power to read the stars. She plucked them from that inky black abyss, one by one, holding each little light as delicately as a blooming flower, and she had the sudden thought that she could do this every day.

Elena could watch her every day, could fully drink in that quiet strength and everlasting patience, and never get bored of it.
