Stop, drop
And drag me into place
And lock the fire escapes
I'll break your pretty face

...

Now shut your dirty mouth
If I could burn this town
I wouldn't hesitate
To smile while you suffocate and die
And that would be just fine
And what a lovely time, that it would surely be
So bite your tongue
And choke yourself to sleep.

- Choke, I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME

A performer rarely sees it fit to use their given name as their stage one, but "Not Baffled" found that she did not have this problem. Whether the name came before or after her affinity for trick magic became obvious was unclear to her. It was a hard thing to determine, what with her parents being dead or close to it. She could scarcely remember when she first found herself alone. It had felt like a constant part of her life.

Whatever was true, her parents had left her at the mercy of chance: her favorite babysitter thus far.

The problem was: orphanages and kindly clan elders often took it upon themselves in her youth to admit her into their care. She quickly found that she didn't have much choice in that matter. Nobody was willing to take a word of a hatchling that they found the roads of Sornieth perfectly safe, and Not Baffled would often find herself unwilling whisked away to whatever clan chose to play savior to her.

What she could choose - when she left. Control. If "chance" kept its eyes on her, "control" kept Not Baffled entertained in the meantime.

Her tricks on these kindly saviors started with small hallucinations. Disembodied voices calling out to them, threatening them to leave the hatchling alone "or else". It didn't take much to make these adult dragons soon abandon the strange, haunted hatchling, terrified of the voices that entered their head that had suddenly taken root in their head. This kept most would-be rescuers at bay, letting the dragon travel Sorneith unbothered.

But there was always a dragon or two who fancied themselves a hero. Someone who, despite the insistence of those around them, no less Not Baffled herself, took her in and held her close.

In the grand scheme of it, these dragons were more or less minor nuisances. Sooner or later, her wanderlust would free her once again. A chance for escape, eyes diverted at just the wrong moment, a guard let down for just a moment too late - all chances she took to flee for the roads once more. As she aged, so too did the complexity of her magic - her escape plans became more elaborate, sometimes not out of necessity but intrigue. Her caretakers rarely took well to this. "This is a bad idea," "you have no choice to stay, child, wait, what are you doing with that hammer?", Not Baffled had heard it all. Excuses to keep her tied to one place. And whatever excuse they could throw at her, she certainly could devise a trick to challenge. Her propensity for mental torture grew with each encounter with Sornieth's bleeding hearts, each wanting to take in the lost hatchling. They became target practice, a means through which to exercise her new taunts and tricks.

Truth was, Not Baffled could have taken care of herself from the start. She scarcely needed parents to bring her into the world. Her magic was of a much deeper vein, existing before her supposed ancestors themselves. Whatever bonds Sornieth offered her wrists were unlikely to remain.

The Spirited Lady thus far has only been a place to rest her head before the next great adventure calls her. But for now, patrons can enjoy her affinity for slight of hand, card tricks, and a touch of good-old-fashioned gambling. As an adult, far fewer dragons have taken it upon themselves to act as her caretaker. But when the odd male approaches for a chance of earning her time? Well, even the most powerful of magicians can stand to improve their craft...
