B I O G R A P H Y
Tequ only knew a few things for certain .growing up: He lived in a colony of Fae in the Ashfall Waste. The Elders seem to think that the volcano has a will of its own. His parents are dead. His whole family is dead. He is alone and owes his life to the rest of the colony for raising him. One day he will be sacrificed to the volcano to appease the Flames. His fate has been laid out for him and all of the other orphaned hatchlings for as long as he can remember. One day, it will be their turn to calm the never ending rage in the heart of their home. He saw it times and times again: The equinox comes close and a young dragon he barely knows gets spirited away only to return dressed in beautiful silks with a golden crown. They’d celebrate them all day and all night until the time comes that the Elders lead them away, never to be seen again. He knew this was his fate from the beginning and yet, when his time finally came, he wasn’t ready. He just got done helping a few of the older dragons fix the damage the last fire has done to their dens, when the Elders stepped towards him, holding one claw on his shoulder and asking him to follow in a sickly sweet voice. Everything in him wanted to resist, but he followed them quietly just like he was taught. At the Elders’ Den he got dressed in fine silks and adorned with beautiful golden jewellery like all the other sacrifices before him. His whole body was trembling until one of the Elders, in that same dripping voice, asked for the people in the room to leave him alone so he could calm down before being presented to the rest of the colony. Being at a loss on how to get out of this situation, that was so clearly wrong, he pressed his ears to the door. “… This batch of hatchlings truly was the worst of them.”, he heard. “All of them are cowards in the face of their great destiny I thought this one would be better, but look at him! We can’t present him to the colony when he shakes like a wisp in the wind!” “Calm down brother”, another Elder answers. “We didn’t get through all that trouble to raise them for us to turn back on the plan just because they can’t accept their glorious purpose. We can just play it off, I’m sure” Tequ recoiled from the door. The way the Elder talked about him and the other orphans like they were cattle made his crests shiver and his stomach cramp up uncomfortably. He didn’t want this. He didn’t want to be cattle. He had to get out. His wings were numb by the time he allowed himself to stop. Getting here wasn’t easy and he barely managed it at all. Squeezing out of one of the tiny windows of the den was hard enough decked out in all that fine silk but it was almost impossible to get around undetected! He only just managed to take off when he heard the enraged screams and the sounding alarm. He didn’t remember much, everything was a blur after that, but guards were chasing him and the other people of the colony yelled at him to stop being foolish. The people he loved, who raised him, suddenly didn’t seem as loving anymore. More like monsters with their claws grasping for him as he zipped by. He was almost certain that they would catch him, but, like a miracle, the moon suddenly got clouded and the world turned dark. Stick to the shadows little one, they will guide your way to me... He swore he heard a voice say. So he did. He hid behind rocks and buildings. Sticking to the shadows as they wandered from the light and followed them into the unknown. And now he’s here. Far, far away from what he called home. In front of a building of pure obsidian. Maybe, just maybe, he could finally rest for a bit, without feeling afraid. |
