A FLOWER IN THE DARK___
The Hewn City is a dark and cursed blemish on the otherwise bright lands of the Sunbeam Ruins, well known for its hauntings. The darkness and pervading sense of fear and sorrow turn most wise dragons away from the place--and are the very aspects that drew Heliotrope there, like a moth to a flame. She paces the broken streets, seeking out those restless spirits that still linger there, and sings to them of peace. She is there to help, to ease their fears and doubts, to guide them safely to the Beyond where they may finally rest. There is no need for them to endure in this dark, cold place. |
___THE GENTLE REAPER
The Flower did not have a name when they were born. What use is a name among those who do not speak? And though they were given the form of a female Gaoler, they felt little connection to either aspect; this body was only a tool, not a self. They knew their role instinctively, however: that of a guardian, a protector of their kind and the souls they were created to serve. As a child, they trailed along after their nestmates and older siblings as they explored the Driftwood Drag, always climbing higher and sniffing further ahead than the others, scouting for trouble and misadventure. The pale fledgling often played the fanciful role of a knight, chasing "dangerous" animals away from their companions and warning them away from such imaginary hazards as quicksand and lava. But the Tangled Wood can be a dangerous realm, and as they and their siblings grew older and ventured further, the young Flower learned more about the real dangers in the world around them: pitfalls and monsters, aggressive Beastclans and hostile dragons. The Flower spent more and more time training in the arts of combat and healing as they got older. It would be essential to their role as a Shield to be able to deter threats and heal the wounded. The hours once spent playing in the woods and fens were now dedicated to strengthening themself and exploring the limits of their magic. They studied the Rituals, too, though they come instinctively to most Mourning Flowers; it was important to understand how they were performed by their own parents and grandparents, so their family's particular traditions could carry on. |

The time eventually came, as it does for all young dragons, for the silver Flower to leave the nest and make their own place in the world. There were Mourning Flowers enough in the Driftwood Drag to shepherd the souls there, and though their family loved them and welcomed them to stay nearby, they wanted to see more of the world. If they looked, they knew they would find a place that truly needed them. The first place they ventured was through the thick forest separating the Tangled Wood from the Sunbeam Ruins. They were curious about the Light, harboring none of the mortal Shadow dragons' rivalry toward their opposing flight. The difference between the two lands was a shock to the Flower's system, however; the brightness and energy and bustle and noise, such a sharp contrast to the quiet, solitary darkness of their birthplace. They found it fascinating and magnetic, but so wholly intimidating that they didn't dare venture any further into that sun-soaked land. Instead, the Flower turned in the opposite direction, and traveled out into Dragonhome. For years, they lived a nomadic life, journeying through the territories of each flight and bringing rest to the lingering dead wherever they went. And as they journeyed, they learned more about the living, about the cultures and lives of mortal dragons. They felt drawn to explore more, not only of the amazing, varied landscapes of Sornieth, but of the many diverse people who lived and worked and loved all around them. They would find their own place in time, but for now, there was so much to experience. |
The more she saw and experienced, the more connected the young Flower felt to her mortal form. She felt more like a dragon, like a Gaoler, than she ever had in her youth. She still knew herself as a creature apart from the living world, and her fascination with mortal dragons didn't diminish her dedication to her duty as a Mourning Flower, but she had time enough and room enough in her heart for this new love as well. She mostly kept to the edges of society as she traveled, but there was still plenty to see from that vantage point. Often she remained hidden from mortal sight, just observing, but there were times when she wanted to interact as well. Watching was not the same as doing, and tasting, and feeling. Most dragons could sense something strange about her, and shied away from the sorrowful cries of the long-dead that followed her like a rolling fog, but there were still those generous ones who would welcome her and speak to her anyway. She couldn't speak back, of course, being as empty of voice as the others of her kind, but she learned other ways to communicate: sign language was her favorite, and writing sufficed for those dragons unfamiliar with it. She discovered the wonders of books, too, volumes of history, poetry, and fiction that taught her so much more about the world around her. |

Many years passed, but the silver Flower eventually found herself entering the Sunbeam Ruins again. It no longer intimidated her, after her experiences traveling the rest of Sornieth, though the lands were still dazzlingly bright to her sensitive Shadow eyes. She had heard of a place that sounded like it may require the aid of a Mourning Flower: the Hewn City, known to be a cursed and haunted ruin. She still had not found a place she felt entirely at home in throughout her travels, and even if she didn't find it there, the Hewn City was surely a place she could do some good before she moved on. She felt at home as soon as she arrived. She could feel the presence of so many lonely souls, longing for aid, and the quiet darkness of the place wrapped around her like a warm blanket. And yet, the life and energy she craved was right outside the ruins, so beautiful and near. Her days and nights could be spent searching the streets for lost souls, singing to them of peace and home, calling them to the Veil. And during the hours of dawn and twilight, and on the occasional cloudy day, she could venture out into that bright, vibrant landscape to see what marvels the living had to offer. To be alive. |
THE SHIELDED
Heliotrope's soul trait, The Shielded, is manifested in her simple, instinctive drive to protect. When she is near other Mourning Flowers, she takes a position near the edge of the group, gazing around periodically to ensure that no threats have crept up on her unwary kin. It's not a behavior she's consciously aware of, but something she falls into naturally and comfortably. The same trait drives her strong need for exercise and activity, keeping herself strong and fit so that when the time comes to defend her loved ones, she's ready for it. That protective streak is also behind her drive to keep mortals away from lost souls. It wouldn't do, not at all, to have some mischievous dragon come harass her charges, confusing them or trying to pull them away from the Veil. When they have no mortal forms with which to defend themselves, and no song to guide them to the Beyond, what is left to protect them from those who would hold them back or harm them? Heliotrope steadfastly chases away anyone she considers an interloper when she is tending to her tasks. However, she is almost as dedicated to protecting foolish travelers from the dangers of the Hewn City, as well. She does not want more of those sorrowful, lonesome ghosts haunting the streets. Just as she lures and frightens unwary dragons away from the souls she cares for, she also lures and frightens them away from the wicked creatures and dangerous pitfalls hidden throughout the ruins. |
ESSENCE OF LIFE
Despite her Shadow heritage, Heliotrope was drawn irresistibly toward the light and energy of the Sunbeam Ruins. She rarely feels like she is truly a part of the living world, like the dragons around her, but she still has great admiration for their mortal passions and vitality. Her first priority is still the protection of her kin and the restless dead, but that does not mean she can't defend the living, as well. » Healing Breath: A blessing from her connection to the Graveyard that allows her to sing wholeness back into injured mortal flesh, to soothe the heat of fever, and to clear and strengthen the lungs of those struggling to breathe. The song is a musical whisper, words impossible to make out, but it brings deep peace and comfort to those who hear it. |
THE FREE
Though her roots tie her closely to the Hewn City, Heliotrope still treasures the memories of her journeys before she came here. She travels only rarely now, but her imagination is free to roam. In her downtime, she's often buried in a book, letting the words and images take her to faraway places and speak to her of countless lives and adventures. » Spiritual Awareness: She sees the souls of the dead more clearly than many other Mourning Flowers, and can track down even the more fearful and reluctant souls with a natural ease. » Empathy: Her love of the living allows her to sense the emotions of those around her. She is not yet very practiced in this gift, however, and can find large groups of dragons confusing and overwhelming. |
