The Dendrolepis

Having evolved in seclusion deep within the Shrieking Wilds, the Dendrolepis subspecies is a striking example of dragon evolution. Believed to have originated from Spirals, Dendrolepis bodies are thicker and more tubular than common spirals. Their wings also tend to be smaller and their heads larger.

As they live primarily in the forest canopy their preferred diet consists of insects, birds, monkeys and small manticores. Occasionally they have been seen feeding on Insectus Plagas, small faelike insects hailing from the Scarred Wasteland. As such, fae should beware when foraging in territory known to contain wild populations of Dendrolepis.

No longer capable of true powered flight, these creatures glide from tree to tree where the gap is too wide to cross via branches. Outside of their native region, this subspecies does well in Shadow and forested Light and Arcane territories, though they have been seen on rocky canyon/cliff faces in Lightning, Earth and Wind.

Rarely, anecdotal evidence surfaces of spiral Dendro living underground in Plague and in underwater caves in Water territory. Spiral based dendrolepis are very poorly adapted to cold climates, making them unable to withstand the cold of Ice territory. Current research also indicates this sub-species cannot live in Fire territory, the land lacking significant vegetation or stable cave systems/cliffs.

This subspecies come in a wide variety of colours but their markings largely remain the same, though iridescent Dendrolepis are rarely seen.

It is important to note that while most Dendrolepis usually have only mild poison, the obsidian variations have poison potent enough to kill a large imperial. Seeing as they have really small fangs however, that’s not a problem for any dragons with a sufficiently thick covering of hide, fur or scales.

The more vivid and contrasting the belly/tert, the stronger the venom.
