They were young when it first started - when the village became sickly, when their neighbors began dropping like flies. They were helpless to do anything but watch, just had to keep lighting the pyres, burning the houses, in the hopes that maybe the disease would die out then and there.

It never did. They burned their house to the ground after they watched their papa die.
