Biography
TW: BODY HORROR
____ |
Born in a small lair on the Shattered Plain, Gileum always felt called to something higher. She was especially sensitive to the Earthshaker's magics, feeling his call from the Pillar of the World throughout her childhood. As soon as she was of age, she heeded this, and travelled to join the acolytes in one of the many temples around the Pillar. She rose through the ranks there, eventually becoming a well-respected priestess. When the Dustcarve Dig began, she naturally put her temple to work—trading, digging, and fighting to collect the resources the intensive operation demanded. She could feel the rough song of the Earthshaker in her ears, louder every day, and pushing her fervour to greater and greater heights (maybe, to depths). As tunnel after tunnel was uncovered, more and more work was needed to fuel it, until their work was no longer enough to make a difference. That was when her temple began to explore more unorthodox methods. They used their magic to fuse chemicals into blasting powder, and unearth huge fossilised trees to turn into beams. Gileum herself led the lantern oil team: through intensive group rituals, they called up the hidden reserves of oil deep in the earth, a raw and magical substance that could then be refined to fuel the lanterns. In the last stages of the operation, Gileum volunteered herself to streamline the process. She allowed her body to be used as a conduit in these rituals, drawing ever vaster streams of oil from the ground. When the dig was complete, there was naturally uproarious celebration, but the process had taken its toll on Gileum. Her wings were now cracked and oozing, her body slick with dripping oil. She found herself falling into coughing fits, shaking and retching up dregs of the dark fluid. By the time the obelisks reached her temple, it was clear she would never recover. Though she kept up her duties, she found that the dragons who'd once been her friends, prayed with her, used her body to serve their god, were now carefully avoiding her. The grisly consequences of their desperate magic seemed too much for most devotees to handle, and they gave her a wide berth whenever they could. Filled with a mix of anger, grief, and the unshakeable knowledge that she had done right by her god, she decided to leave. One of the obelisks who'd stopped by their temple for resources, an anxious traveller named Azepa, agreed to bring Gileum with her. Now she travels beside the obelisk, helping her in her preparations, and pretending not to notice the horrified looks she always gets. ▬▬ ADDITIONAL ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
