"He's cursed... he'll bring Fate crashing down on our heads. He should be sent away immediately." Whispers never ceased, even in the silence of his own company. Preece didn't need to speak Draconic to understand. Such endless words of fear and distaste had followed him since his hatching and the expressions on their faces spoke for themselves - it would be stranger for him to remain oblivious to their barbed words. When war came to them with dragons forged in armour, pointing weapons at their homes and families, eyes turned to him, accusing stares that haunted his dreams, blaming him for their downfall. "He did this, the coatl with the grey-white plumage."

Never before had Preece felt so small - not even as a hatchling wide-eyed and innocent - as he did when his clan sent him to the Enlisters. "Go fight for the war you brought to us," they told him as they bid him farewell with smiles on their faces. Genuine happy smiles - happy he was finally going away. His parents never sent him away prior, their conscience unable to allow it. But now the clan had an excuse under the guise of war and his parents lowered their heads and averted their eyes, tugging his sister away.

Now in the corner of a tent under a cold star-strewn sky, Preece lay curled in a ball of dull feathers, alone. Four nights in a row had he done this as they travelled across the expanses of Sornieth. That is, until something small nudged its way under his wing, looking for warmth among scaly dragons. Upon instinct he recoiled, tightening his wings closer to his body, but the small creature was already there and he could feel it pressed to his chest. Cautiously, he lifted a wing and a small grey crested head blinked up at him with owlish pink eyes. It was the first time somebody had willingly chosen to interact with him. Who are you?
