The owner of a casino like no other. "Overconfident" feels too judgmental a term for Paradise to personally describe himself as, and besides, when did a little bit of morale do a dragon harm? In his line of work, swagger is a selling point. He's an entertainer. Guests enter the casino with deep pockets and bellies just waiting to be swollen with hors d'oeuvres a'plenty, while the basement's great beast waits with a greasy patience. Send someone in to toss the thing a discarded hamburger or whatever's left of the plates. It's not enough, it'll never be enough until the stupor, but patience. That's a key element here. Paradise know that as well as anyone. Cards are dealt as freely as drinks, and the beds they promise for a night spent too thoroughly indulged are just enough a distance that the guests barely notice the snap, before it's all over. Then Paradise draws the great red-shutter folding doors over the basement entrance once again. The beast of the basement licks its lips, anxiously reliant on its temporary master. They wouldn't be drawn here if evil didn't lurk in their hearts. That enchantment on the casino has existed since the devil himself crafted the thing out of thin air, a monster of obnoxious music and strobes. Then again, if they weren't so stupid, they wouldn't be dead. Nobody forced them to go stumbling into the basement, after all. Paradise was smart enough on his initial visit to avoid the temptations offered to him, as guarded in life as he was in death. That's the sort of disposition that gets the devil interested in your service. And no better an accomplice has served him as Paradise, hell's dealer, keeper of the great devouring maw that leads the unworthy to eternal damnation. In other words, watch your step. |
