Bean's Personal Lore
Canon-Divergence Guide

I'm the kind of person who likes to work around canon rather than completely diverge from it, but I do have a few headcanons. Lore guide.
  • While facial expressions don't come naturally to faes, they can be learnt and a good number express themselves with expressions fluently.
  • Love the size differences, and I keep them, with a few exceptions:
    • Ridgebacks are about the same size as imperials. Ridgebacks are taller, imps are longer, and neither is inherently "bigger".
    • Spirals and skydancers are a bit bigger than canon size.
    • Veils are not that small. They just aren't built like that. Maybe around snapper size (if I'm remembering size correctly).
  • Also: veils can't fly.
  • Veil hypnosis is more illusion than hypnosis.
  • Very sick coatls may develop pale feathers if theirs were vibrant before. However, their feathers also fray and will fall out more than usual. They'll also show lethargy, much like other breeds.
  • Being born as a specific breed doesn't decide your personality, it just makes it so you're just slightly probably going to have more of a this temperament than a that temperament, with heritage taken into account. Kind of like dog breeds. I think ShiningLatios' take perfectly encapsulates my opinion on the encyclopedia entries.
    • Magic is innate, and breed has no effect on magical ability. Magic can be learned, though some dragons are more skilled than others. Dragons can learn elemental magic that doesn't match their own element, but it is very difficult to master and the magic won't be as potent as that of a dragon from that element.
  • Incubated eggs are breed-specific, but all dragon eggs are similarly patterned with plates and spikes so it's still hard to tell what breed the hatchlings will be if the parents are different breeds. Abandoned eggs eventually suck too much magic out of their surroundings and become the elemental eggs you can find.
    • Abandoned eggs can hatch any species and genes. This is probably already canon, though, just not included because gameplay.
    • Abandoned elemental eggs, if left in another flight long enough, will swap elements. This can only happen before the embryo fully develops, otherwise the dragon will die yadda yadda yadda.
    • Eye color is affected by element, and element does not affect allegiance. About half of Sornieth is aligned with the elemental region they were born in, while others travel.
  • Flights fight, and there are beastclan conflicts, but none are as major as the old wars. Except nature and plague, because those flights have some serious beef. Of course, some clans are neutral, and some have positive affiliations, but for the most part it's very hostile.
  • The deities aren't gods, just very old beings with immense power. Most dragons do not worship them, they simply respect them. They'll pray sarcastically or in desperation. ("Lightweaver, please don't let me fail my linguistics exam.") The closest they come to being gods is being able to create magic from nothing.
  • Like energy, magic cannot be created or destroyed. The only exceptions are the deities or special charms created by the deities. It can only be transferred from one place, object, or entity to another.
  • You can feel the presence of magic. If your species is capable of channeling or summoning magic, you'll be able to feel when it is there, and in what concentration. Magic is not a vague phenomenon: it is quantifiable.
  • Familiar eye colors align with their element.
  • Some familiar species are entirely unable to sense/wield magic, and therefore have no element.
    • Dragons can also theoretically be completely neutral, but since they have such an innate affinity for magic being within several hundred miles of Sornieth will cause them to be hatched with magic. This is because of the extreme concentrations of magic on the continent.
  • During Sornieth-wide festivals, festival currencies simply start appearing. This is thought to be the work of the deities. There are many more microholidays, Trading Post traders, and Grand Exchange shopowners than Flight Rising could possibly include.
    • The current traders are not the only ones offering these services. They are simply the most well-known and/or well-established.
    • Joxar is an extremely smart businessdragon.
