CARNELIAN
FOUNDER & PROTECTOR
Another stranger amongst my clan. In past days I might have bid you to leave. But Little Silver says we are to welcome travelers, and to him I have given my rule. If I do not follow him I break my own word, and so you are welcome. But heed this warning: this clan is my Charge. It is founded through me, and I protect it with my life. If you seek to harm my land or any of its dragons, I will tear you down where you stand.

I am of the Old Dragons born to the gods. My creator and my mother is the Flamecaller. She shaped my egg from the lava of the Blacksand Annex and incubated it within the Great Furnace. When I hatched to her she called me Carnelian, like the red stone of our lands. She poured out smoke and fire to sustain me, and I grew strong within the Furnace.

When I was grown, my mother the Flamecaller gave me my Charge. I was to protect what she had created. She said: go forth in my land and defend us from beasts, from dragons, from the gods themselves. She sent with me another of her children, a Coatl called Sardonyx. And so we went. I settled in the shallow pools of the Emberglow Hearth with my mate, and we bore many hatchlings. Many of them returned to the Flamecaller in service. From time to time I long for their company, but they now serve my own mother, and I cannot complain too greatly. Many others left the clan, even the Waste, on their Search. My heart goes with them.

The land in which I settled was warm, strong, and fertile, at the edge of a magma vent. Rich plants sprung from the soil and fish abounded in the creek. Our settlement attracted many dragons in passing. A few stayed with us: craftsmen, mostly, seeking to hone their trade in a young clan before moving onwards. So the numbers of our clan ebbed and flowed like the magma beneath us.

After a few years, our land grew warmer. The magma vent had grown. It was beginning to absorb the edges of our clan settlement. I saw no problem with this. It was fine for our metalworkers, and for our dragons born to the Flamecaller. Those with fire in their blood grew strong. But the dragons born to other gods were weakening. They fell heat-sick. Many left in a great outpouring.

The Little Silver demanded that we leave the Emberglow Hearth. I refused. This land had been given to me by the Flamecaller. It was my Charge . . . or so I thought then. But as my friends and family grew sick and frail, the hardness in my heart melted, and I saw the truth. The rock under my feet was not my Charge. My Charge was my clan, my friends and family. And I had failed them. So I gave my leadership that day to the Little Silver, and he led us from the Emberglow Hearth and into the land called the Molten Scar.

We settled here, on thick land at high altitude in the middle of the Scar. In the Emberglow Hearth, the smoke from the Great Furnace obscured our view of the sky. But as we set out into open land, we could see the moon and stars. The magma here burned hotter, brighter, but far beneath our home. As the sun rose, the Little Silver named us the Clan of Twin Suns, for the new sun above us and the new sun below. The lava flows down and past us here, feeding our forges but no threat to our home. It is beautiful land. Our forges always have fresh heat. Our clan has doubled in size, and it only continues to grow.

Thank you, stranger, for listening to an old Guardian's tale. I wish you safe travels. Or perhaps you will stay with us a while?
