"Our kingdom flies as high as our hopes and dreams."
"Welcome to the clan of the Crystal Nook, named after our previous home which was an extensive cave, having humble origins as just a nook. We have since re-established ourselves as New Nook City, here on this floating island. I am Arjibi, the founder and queen, and number five in the Council of Elders. You may remember me as a basic Fae, but my outrageous transformation was entirely necessary to reclaim my rightful place as leader. I thought I was blessed when the Arcanist imbued me with Aura, but it seems younger dragons are born gifted and stronger. My naturally weak Aura has been a great obstacle to me in the past, but now I am surrounded by many who can support me and as a result, my Aura has become more powerful. We have overcome our dark ages under the rule of a false monarchy and the clan has entered a renaissance. May you rejoice and be merry during your stay."
Prologue
The Arcanist sat in the Observatory, in a moment's pause. Usually, he would be feverishly scribbling information onto four different parchments at once, but in this brief moment, he sat there frozen. With two of his emaciated arms held out in front of him, he formed a triangle with his clawed fingers. He closed his eyes and murmured, "progenitor." When his eyes reopened, his arms were already busy with writing once again, and the deity returned to his occupied state. Outside, in the Starfall Isles, different wavelengths of light gathered in the sky and formed a color triangle, with red, green, and blue at its points. The Auratic energy trapped inside of the triangle began to take a solid form, and a dragon was created. It was a female Fae, created of the Arcane flight. She fell from the sky, before opening her wings and gliding to one of the twisted pink mountains, where she clung to the rocky face. Her name was Arjibi, and she had taken form for the first time. Immediately, an Unlikely Alliance rocketed towards her as if it were a magnet. It tried to fuse with her, but the dragon's body had already stopped being ethereal. The unstable orbiting elements still desired to be a part of something greater, and it took to orbiting her, like planets to a sun.
The Rise and Fall of Queen Arjibi
Imbued with Aura, a magical life energy from the deity, Arjibi knew it was her duty to start a new lair in the name of the Arcanist. She found a little nook in the Crystalpine reaches, and began trying to clear space. Robotically chipping away, she was putting everything she had into the excavation effort, and with each dig her small claws performed, she gave a frustratingly exhausted but determined warcry. The task seemed impossible, but suddenly, the workload became lightened and rocks seemed to be flying out of the new lair and tumbling down the cliffside. It wasn't her doing, though. She turned and saw a massive dragon. It was a male Guardian that had joined her and was helping carve out the cave that would hold the new lair. "I feel like you're just supposed to be here," Arjibi said, watching him with awe. "I feel like I'm supposed to be here too," the Guardian replied, and without stopping his work, he grinned with pride. Thus, Arjibi took to his presence. As the male called Hydra worked to clear the space in their new dragonmade cave, she constructed the first nest. Together, they founded the Clan of the Crystal Nook. They had half a dozen offspring, most of which were exalted to the Arcanist to show appreciation for letting them start a new clan in his territory. The founders watched their lair grow, as different kinds of dragons possessing a familiar Aura joining them. Little did the founders know that their world would be rocked multiple times - the first of which was when a male Wildclaw named Icytalon joined their clan. Icytalon had a weak Aura similar to Hydra's, as he challenged him for dominance. At this point, Aura was unimportant and small in the grand scheme of things, so the fight became physical. Hydra did his best to fend off the challenger, but the young Wildclaw's huge talons were enough to drive Hydra back, leading Arjibi to take Icytalon as her new mate. The Guardian that had graciously helped create the lair was now forced to move down the ranks, as the new king and queen had their offspring, all of which were exalted to the Arcanist. The pair didn't last long, as a new challenger approached. A male Fae who looked similar to the queen interrupted them with his powerful Aura. She immediately took to the new arrival, leaving Icytalon in the dust. The second king fell as the king Fae took power, and the queen was twitterpated. Perhaps it was a mistake to king the Fae with the powerful Aura. Though the twin king and queen ruled the lair for a time, as the prodigy king grew even stronger, he honed his Aura to control elements. Possibly mad with power, the king took full control, though the clan had once been a matriarchy, so the clan was shell-shocked when queen Arjibi was forced out. The king took a new queen as Arjibi fell in grace and rank. The new king and queen were born elsewhere, and stole power from the true heirs of the clan. Mass Exaltings took place that took both Icytalon and Hydra's second mate, Darksparkle. Arjibi found herself by Hydra's side again, fellow founders practically banished to the bottom ranks of the clan, as the lair was completely lost to strangers. The disgrace was almost too much and she contemplated exalting herself often.
The Spark of Revolution
August 22, 2018. Arjibi slowly had everything stripped from her. Living in the deepest part of the cave, having nothing of value, and her life feeling the same way, she had her suspicions that she was only kept around for display – for visitors to look at and see that the clan "proudly" keeps around its founding progenitor. If only outsiders knew the truth, about the injustices brought on her and Hydra. She felt so hopeless that it surprised her to see several members of the clan come together to approach her in her chamber of shame. Chessa, the gamemaster, Gilded, the treasurer, and Contagia the alchemist, were in her presence. "Come to finish me off? Where's the Exalt Expert?" Arjibi sourly inquired. "No, my queen," Gilded stepped forward. Arjibi's expression softened; it had been years since she was referred to as a queen. She helplessly looked between the three of them with curiosity. "Some of the dragons in the lair have been secretly forming a rebellion," explained Chessa. "At the very least, us three and the Nox Guard, we've been," she paused, trying to find the words before resuming, "cooperating to raise you and the old king back up - to breathe life back into you, to make you feel powerful once again." "Chessa has been doing puzzles nonstop for over a week," Gilded chimed in. "I, of course, have been withholding information from the false king about the amount of treasure we have. It's been used to fund your makeover, my queen." Contagia coughed, wheezed, then began to chuckle sinisterly and Chessa cut her eyes towards her. "And Contagia has been brewing relentlessly," Chessa said, with almost a scolding tone which made Contagia stop chuckling and clear her throat. With that, Contagia stepped forward, reached into her robes, and carefully pulled out all the scrolls. She set them down on the floor in front of Arjibi. Arjibi felt like she was in a dream as she collected the scrolls, and Gilded spoke again. "The Nox Guard is still in the fray, slaying and foraging for the king's gene. I suggest you remain hidden here until he's complete, and then we can make the move to take down the false king." The trio of rebels fell silent as Arjibi started to unfurl the scrolls that would restore her power. She spoke the magic incantations on each scroll: primary, secondary, then tertiary, and the genes started to become visible on her body as the scrolls turned to dust. She reached the fourth scroll – a Pearlcatcher breed change. She paused and questioningly looked up at the two Pearlcatchers that stood before her. "We thought it would look good," reassured Gilded. Arjibi then spoke the final incantation, and her body turned to Auratic energy - the way it had been when she was first created. The Unlikely Alliance that still orbited her didn't hesitate this time, and it disappeared into the bright light that was Arjibi's body. She grew in size, retaking form, and the once-Fae queen sat there now as a Pearlcatcher. The trio that stood before her was in shock. "My queen! Y-your…!" Chessa gasped. "Your Unlikely Alliance!" Contagia hacked. Their concern was further interrupted as Arjibi began to regurgitate something. She retched and a pearl fell into her hands; marked on it, was a still image of her Unlikely Alliance. Though she was an adult, the pearl was as small as a newborn hatchling's. To Arjibi, it symbolized her rebirth. It was nearly three weeks before the rebels started to make a move. On the day that a newcomer joined their clan, Arjibi and Hydra slowly moved up the ranks, undetected. This new dragon had creepy and bizarre properties that blocked Aura and the detection of it - thus they were able to use her as a shield as they moved closer to the false monarchy. The Nox Guard held position very near to the powerful Faes, and could help harbor the progenitors even closer. Once there, the attack could commence. Ambushing the false king was priority, and they would need Aristheus, the Exalt Expert, to forcibly exalt him and the false queen in order for them to regain control of the clan. Arjibi hid behind the Aura blocker and anxiously tucked her pearl into her twice-dyed mantle for safekeeping. This was the closest she had been to the top of the lair in years, and she knew it wouldn't be long before she could see the sun again.
Renaissance
September was an eventful month. With the Arcane holiday on the horizon, Arjibi especially felt that it was time to reclaim what was hers; enough with the waiting! Aristheus was the wrench in their cogs, the reason they were waiting - an exposed coward, fearfully refusing to defy the false royalty. After a rough coercion, Aristheus was thrust into the grand court of the king and queen. It was a huge, well-lit cavern, and at the back were the thrones where the faes lazed. It wasn't out of the ordinary for Aristheus to be in the room with them, as he was utilized as an advisor and informant, and so there was no suspicion. "Aristheus, I didn't feel you arrive," the king said plainly. He didn't know it, but he was referring to the moment Aristheus passed the Aura-Blocker and his Aura became visible again. "My king." Aristheus squeaked, feeling small. He was on the floor, and walked on all fours towards his fellow faes. "May I have a word with you?" Outside, all that the rebels could do was wait, and hope that Aristheus would succeed in his exalting of the king. Standing before the monarchy, Aristheus reached to his side and thumbed through his books that rested at his side - quietly passing over general logkeeping, and taking his Book of Exalting. He hesitated with his hand gripping it, before he launched the attack. Aristheus sprung towards the king in a powerful leap, tackling and knocking him out of his throne. In the scuffle, the king's crown clattered across the cavern and Aristheus used his whole body weight to keep him subdued as the king's violent Aura flared like an explosion. The Aura made Aristheus feel like death incarnate but he held him down. The queen was actually powerless and relied on the king, so her fight-or-flight kicked in, and she took flight. Hearing the commotion and knowing the final act was in play, the Nox Guard stormed the room, cutting off the queen from the exit. "Guards! Aristheus is a traitor!" The king screeched, but the Nox Guard stood firmly at the door. Realizing that a coup was taking place, the king suddenly and eerily calmed, and his Aura receded to an unfeeling state. The cavern was silent apart from Aristheus' panicked breaths and the queens small footsteps as she darted back and forth like a trapped beast. "Then, may The Shade curse you all," were the king's final words, as Aristheus began to read the incantation aloud from his book. The King was then exalted, leaving behind his belongings. The queen could do nothing as Aristheus exalted her, and as she disappeared to serve a higher cause, her crown lay on the floor where she once had been. Aristheus collapsed on the floor in an anxious heap as the Nox Guard left to break the news to the clan. "The false monarchy has been exalted," was the phrase that Arjibi played in her head over and over. Tears were forming in her eyes as she looked at Hydra and they both knew that their renaissance had started. Together, they walked the corridors to the cave's mouth. Having been used to the darkness and ambient light of torches, the sunlight was painful, but at the same time, too beautiful for words. And so, the pair stood in silence as they looked out into the Starfall Isles; the water sparkled, the crystal mountains glistened, and birds could be seen flying against the yellow sky as the progenitors recalled their humble beginnings. Arjibi's snapshot memory of this moment was applied as mucus to her pearl.
. . .
As the clan celebrated the return of their benevolent leaders, Arjibi and Hydra took their place at the top of the lair once more. The Starfall Celebration coincided with the Crystal Nook's personal celebration, and the entire clan was filled to the brim with pride and joy. Arjibi and Hydra took to the nesting ground for the first time in years, and their clutch was hatched during the holiday. While the others fulfilled their duty being exalted, the pair decided to keep the firstborn of this clutch. She was named Starlight, and her birth and presence in the clan was a physical reminder of everything they had went through. Starlight was the dawning of a new age as the clan thrived. And thrive it did: with the false monarchy gone, the clan's motivation and morale was bolstered. Chessa began to earn maximum treasure at an accelerated rate, all of which could finally be used for the benefit of every dragon in the lair. The bountiful daily treasure jump-started the clan's inner-economy and the lair was more active than ever as they prospered and revitalized more members with genes. Dragons acquired jobs, became well-dressed and expanded their territory as the future of the lair was now monetarily secured. It was well and truly a renaissance. |
