Biography
I.
On this day, in the month of the Greenskeeper, I am saved.
I flew for days from the Plaguebringer’s wasteland with those terrible beasts nipping at my heels and thought I found final rest among the crags and cliffs of the Earthshaker’s domain. The sun beats down so hot on the stone, the only shade within the terrible crags. All these stones, all these terrible corners from which those beasts could spring at any moment…
But no, on this day, I am saved. Nameless no longer under the gentle care of kind nomads. They practice their magic along these strange cracked landscapes, walking with their homes upon the backs of stone golems adorned with glowing runes. Their cubs sit around their feet as they speak stories long lost to other flights. These stories I have never heard. These stories they invite me to hear, to sit at their feet with their own cubs and listen in rapt wonder with them.
Kvyn and Kion pulled me from the strange rocks, away from the shadowy corners I try in desperation to light. In their loyal guard’s arms I am cradled, a new member of her charge. This is the sweet, strange love of a family I have never known.
Nameless no longer. They called me Esther, and they gave me a book.
II.
Today I caught sight of the hounds at my heels again, just as the second clutch of Kvyn and Kion came of age. The terrible corners of this den close around me, though the others assure me to keep the faith. I am safe in the shadow of the Horned God.
Today Kvyn and Kion take their children to the depths of the den. There are miles yet to go as we walk. Kvyn and Kion leave me with the rest of the clan at the deep sanctuary and Uriel lights the garlands of glowblossom. We bed down and I have time to write. Orellion goes onward to the sanctum with her parents and the new children. When I ask when they should return, Ximena tells me nothing and looks to the floor. This place is old, the stone ground polished by the passing of a thousand paws before me.
Uriel offers me gentle comfort and tells me a story in quiet voice of a tender-hearted hero caught in the Plaguelands, searching for the lost heart of the grove that she might save a clan that offered her shelter on the scorched rocks of the plateau.
We remained in the sanctuary for three days. On the second day, a terrible sound of shifting stone shook the earth beneath us. I fear I screamed too loudly, awoken from my slumber. Uriel tells me that Kvyn and Kion will return soon. He fears his siblings have been found wanting.
Kvyn, Kion, and Orellion returned from sanctum. Orellion seemed to shake with the weight of the judging, and suddenly I fear my own coming judgement. The children have not returned. Kvyn and Kion say nothing, and all of us began the trek back. Uriel left my side on the walk to join Sanchen in comforting Orellion. What a terrible burden a priest bears here.
