BACKGROUND

Dainty was born to a different name, and a very different life amidst the horror of the Scarred Wasteland. Cast out of his nest for his pale plumage, which was viewed as an omen of illness or misfortune, he was left to fend for himself from a young age.

His cute and unassuming appearance hid the sharpness, cunning, and brutality that his harsh lifestyle forced him to adapt. He committed terrible deeds to survive, and knew little leisure or pleasure. As much as he hated his way of life, he was afraid to venture into the territories of other flights unknown.

One day, he heard of a growing clan in the Southern Icefield that was said to be almost entirely made up of white-feathered coatls. If any community were to ever accept him, he knew that must be it. After a period of hesitation, he crossed the border from the Wasteland to the Starfall Isles, and made the harrowing journey down through the floes to reach the Snowsquall Tundra.

When he finally found the clan he sought, it was more than he had ever dreamed. Everyone was kind, and there was no need for fighting or strife. He renamed himself in the clan’s common fashion, picking a new label to aspire to. Nawashi gave him refuge in her tea house, employing him as a server. To his delight, the tea house’s decorative pet birds immediately took to him, and he quickly picked up a skill for entertaining guests.

The banescale attacks and the Shade curse threw a wrench into everything, as they did for every member of his adopted clan. Once relocated into the Rimebone Stockade, they lost their freedom to go anywhere... But were also relieved of their burden to provide for themselves. A life of pure leisure with all of his needs met was easy for Dainty to accept, despite the downsides.

Dainty peacefully idles his days away in the Stockade, caring for his birds and taking pleasure in whatever his whims carry him to. He still works at Nawashi’s teahouse when he feels like it, now purely for enjoyment of the work rather than to support himself. He feels guilty for enjoying this lifestyle when so many of his friends are unhappy with it.

Alabaster is Dainty’s most consistent customer at the teahouse. Through glimpses of Alabaster’s true self beyond his facade, Dainty has become genuinely fond of him, and resents that Alabaster only spends time with him because he can’t be with Lily.
Ivory occasionally requests Dainty as his server at the teahouse. Even though Dainty is unaware of Ivory’s treachery, he doesn’t like his attitude. He does like the beautiful things and exotic birds Ivory brings him from the outside, though, so he puts up with him.
