NIGHRA

It requires a certain kind of talent to keep a large clan both mobile and cooperative, a talent that Nighra practices daily. Originally the matriarch of a Mirror-dominated group, she’s taken in a number of stragglers from other species and lands, providing them with group protection and purpose in exchange for loyalty and obedience. Despite falling in the middle of the size spectrum when it comes to her clanmates, Nighra has continued to maintain a firm hold on her position as leader and rarely faces opposition from the inside. With half the clan being made up of Mirrors -- most of whom are smaller in stature than herself -- enforcing a pack mentality and keeping a small, dangerous force on call at all times is little trouble.

Physical force is rarely needed, however, as she understands the mechanics of keeping a clan running like a well-oiled machine. Everyone wants -- and needs -- a purpose in life. She’s more than willing to assign one to whomever asks. Every dragon under her leadership has a specific niche within the clan, a role that others depend on in order to fulfill their own assigned tasks. If one dragon fails, the repercussions are felt throughout the whole group. This certainly adds pressure to one’s position, but it also reinforces a feeling of self-importance, responsibility, and belonging. Nighra has fewer desertions than would be expected of a Mirror matriarch.

Like many of her species, she’s typically a dragon of few words. Unlike her brethren, however, she often takes a backseat when it comes to fighting, preferring to trust the others to the task while she manages the rest of the clan. This isn’t to say she can’t fight; on the contrary, she bears a number of terrible scars from her youth as well as a reputation as a casual coliseum fighter. She often leads the pack in hunts, and oversees the training of the clan’s coliseum team. On the rare occasion that she participates in a clan-to-clan battle, she leads, and new inductees in the clan are always told stories of Nighra’s ferocity alongside her fellow Mirrors. Some of the inductees, in fact, are former enemies who were won (or threatened) over to her side by her display of strength and tactical talents.

On a day-to-day basis, however, Nighra is often reserved and collected. Even when challenged, she relies on a more diplomatic approach: threats and sheer numbers. While she seems very aloof and indifferent, she won’t hesitate to defend a clanmate when the need arises, personally if necessary. Despite her preference for organization and efficiency, she’s shown more than once that she’s willing to risk the good of the overall clan to take up for a single dragon. Odd behavior for a Mirror, certainly, but few know of the terrible injury she received years ago, a nearly lethal wound that left her infertile. Since then, she no longer drives new hatchlings from her clan, but permits them to stay with one rule only: that she takes them under her wing for a short period of time. After this form of conditioning -- for that’s the only thing the other dragons can assume it to be -- they return to their mothers to serve the clan alongside them, until the day of maturity when they’re assigned a more prominent role in the group’s system.
