Ran liked the meadow. He liked the peacefulness of it. There were no crowds that jeered or hollered or roared here. There were no hulking bits of magically animated machinery that squealed or growled as it spun or tilted to the delight, and apprehension, of shrieking riders. There were no garishly flashing lights, displays inviting dazzled fun-seekers to "Test Your Mettle!" or "Win a Prize!" or "Behold the Mysteries and Horrors of This New World!". No, the meadow was peaceful. Maybe it wasn't always quiet, sometimes the birds could be overly enthusiastic with their songs, sometimes the folk who lived here took to celebrating with singing and dancing. The sun might some days be so bright it beamed off of Ran's buttercup scales with an intensity that would blind his neighbors if he left his small hut without donning his large cloak, once necessary to stay alive and free now only needed on extremely sunny days or rainy ones. But as loud or bright as the meadow might be, it was a cleaner, happier, less dangerous brightness than the place he left behind. Colors might not pop as fiercely in the meadow but it was easier on your eyes that they didn't.

Even the food was better in the meadow. Here he could taste rich honey, far sweeter than any confectionery nightmare the hideous booth runners of his former captors could churn out, directly from the hives themselves if he asked their queen nicely. Here was cool water and fresh fish, ripe fruits and savory vegetables, food so much more filling to the body and with so much more to offer than the candied apples and sausages of undeterminable age of his past. He swore to himself on his name that the air surely tasted better here, he breathed easier in it without inhaling the fast talking, smooth lies that had been barked and called during his captivity.

Then of course there were the people. All his neighbors now were of far nicer stock than his fellow imprison wretches had been and it went without needing to be acknowledged the meadow mob by leagues was made up of better people than the sinister schemers that had previously kept him low. No one in the meadow frightened him for fun. No one here stalked around, knives out looking for a back to stab. None of his current neighbors, hopefully in time his friends, demanded he do despicable work that ate away at him inside then smiled cruelly and told him to "Cheer up, Buttercup," when he pleaded he was tired and could not go on.

Ran shuddered and dismissed that train of thought. With luck he would never see... Him again. Ran had escaped, he had done the impossible, fled the Carnival and now he lived in a peaceful place slowly healing all the wounds he occured at the hands of the dragon who took evil and disguised it as jubilation. A knock on his window roused him and he sat his thoughts aside. With his faceted feathers chiming softly as he moved Ranunculus approached the sound before flipping the latch open with a gleaming claw. Outside was the cloth skydancer, looking all the world like an animate scarecrow. She flapped a patchwork wing in agitation and waved a piece of paper in one claw.

"What is it? May I see?" Ran took the brightly colored sheet suddenly feeling ill and read it.

CIRCUS FANTASTICO
Dragons of all ages, PREPARE TO BE
AMAZED, ASTOUNDED, AND MYSTIFIED by marvels and monstrosities the likes you've never before seen when Fantastico's Traveling Carnival comes

Ran stopped reading and flung the advertisement away from him as if it burned. "No!" When had that sinister circus of despair started to travel? They did their business just fine from their land of eternal twilight. "He can't come here. He can't." The panic rose in him, high and cold like the ringmaster's laughter. "I-" The instinct to run screamed.

The quilted skydancer grabbed his claws in hers. Though mute, she had learned to communicate perfectly and the flopping of her cloth feathers spoke of reassurance. We will keep you safe, she told him. We meadow folk stick together.
Yes, Ran liked the meadow. But that made the fear he would be taken from it stronger.
