If Komainu is the benevolent force of the wilds, Shishi is his ruthless counterpart. Though not violent without ample cause, she is far less tolerant of Clan Ulalume's forays into the borders and regards the dragons of the Tangled Wood with a deeper, colder suspicion than her mate.
It is for his sake that she is like this. Since their youth, he was always too trusting, too eager. The world struck him as a grand adventure with only dazzling wonders in store. Time and again, he forgot that danger was just as common as delight, and it was Shishi's caution that saved him from humiliation or worse.

She differed from her pack in this way. While the other foo were of a mind to let Komainu explore the perils of the world without much interference, Shishi hated their refusal to protect him. She took it upon herself, swearing oaths under the noonday sun to guard her pack with her life, especially Komainu and his naive, wandering heart. No danger would approach so long as she still drew breath.
Now, those oaths only pertain to Komainu . Shishi and her mate parted ways with the pack after being discovered by Clan Ulalume. It leaves a bitter taste in her mouth, calling the foo cowards, but they ran. They looked at their children, exposed to danger, and instead of fighting, they fled. Not once have they returned to the borderlands, either. For all Shishi knows, they have forgotten her and Komainu entirely. Just a pair of foo cubs lost to the inevitable dangers of Sornieth. A pair of cubs who will one day be replaced by cubs well and truly born into the pack, not just adopted in on a whim. |

To keep her anger at bay, she focuses on accompanying Komainu on his journeys, always no more than a few steps behind. Her keen senses have only grown sharper in the absence of a pack to trust, and she distances herself from the delight Komainu finds under every pebble, in every stream. If only she could share it with him, truly open her heart to him. But survival comes first, and that means her guard must remain high.

Birds wheel overhead at a languid pace, and the land blossoms with plenty.
