Mai had known even as a young hatchling what her charge would be: the Viridian Labyrinth. As the place she was raised, the home of her family, the sanctuary of the blessed Gladekeeper, there was no other realm that could hold her heart so thoroughly. She had assumed this meant she could stay in the same grove her clan had lived in for generations. Destiny, however, had other plans.

When the call of her charge fell in full upon her, a wanderlust worthy of a wind dragon struck her. She stole away in the middle of the night, leaving her clan, her family like some wayward rogue. Only a short note gave them any explanation and a vague one at that. But it couldn't be helped. If she'd stayed a heartbeat more, she'd explode from the pressure of the summons.

The moment she passed the rivulet that marked her clan's borders, she felt at ease once more, as if she was on the right path. She continued eastward at a good pace, eager to meet the dawn and no logical idea why. Days, then weeks passed thus with hardly a moment's rest in between. That was probably why she collapsed. When she woke, Mai found Eston tending to her. It seemed her childhood companion who had always been by her side at the grove had tracked her in order to stay by her side even as her charge called her away.

Together, they continued their patrol of the Viridian Labyrinth. They traveled from the Everbloom Gardens to the Shriekings Wilds and back again.

But it was not to remain the two of them for long. Along the way, a duo of faes joined them. Then another guardian and another and another. Soon, the band of two became a full-fledged clan whose members were as varied as the wildlife under the Behemoth's canopy. And as the clan grew, so did Mai's purpose. In addition to patrolling the Labyrinth, they also collected data and samples to track the health of the various ecosystems (a certain lightning dragon known as Lora may have been involved). Small groups left the Behemoth's shadow to learn of even more ecosystems. Charts were made. Experiments performed. Seeds planted. Gardens tended. And bands of warriors trained to protect it all.

From her charge of protecting the labyrinth, Mai had created something special. She'd created a clan with purpose. She'd created clan Wandering Tree.
