Ludwig is the co-founder, vice-leader, and tactician of the Nebula Guild. He was born in captivity, as a group of powerful fairy-blooded Fae sorcerers calling themselves the Clan of the Twilight Crown had enslaved his parents' clan. At a young age, he was recruited into a gladiatorial arena on the border of the Starwood Strand and the Scarred Wasteland sponsored by the Twilight Crown. There, he met and befriended the wind ridgeback Gungnir, and with great effort and planning, the two of them managed to break out of the arena and escape to the Crystalspine Reaches. Then, they were given refuge and new lives as clan co-founders by Melusine.

Ludwig's sharp mind and experience as a gladiator have been invaluable in the occasional rescue missions that the clan undertook to save incoming shipments of slaves to the Twilight Crown. These efforts led to the rescues of clan members Brock, Silver, and Lakhamu, as well as several captured centaurs who became loyal to Ludwig in gratitude. However, they also led to the Twilight Crown discovering the Nebula Guild and driving them out of the Starwood Strand. Fortunately, they were able to re-establish themselves near Lakhamu's home of Sunvale, on the northern coast of the river that runs through the Sunbeam Ruins.
