Biography

Moontide Clan
Blessed by the waves, in harmony with the world and its inhabitants
water.gif
underwater_cave.jpg
In the depths of Leviathan Trench, which ensconces the Spiral Keep, there stands this standard. It waves slowly, a consistent current flowing past, bringing fresh water from the sunny sea above; strangely enough, down here life that should be alien to the depths thrives; bright, colorful fish and corals abound, making the entrance of the lair, once lit up, positively vibrant. The entrance is a yawning cave, large enough - if only just - to accommodate even the average Imperial, and your passage is lit with twinkling stars - no, jellies, worms, and microorganisms, the latter swirling through your claws like glitter. And just as you begin to wonder how far this cave may go, it suddenly opens up into a massive grotto, an atrium of sorts, everything held in place with thick, ancient pillars; a structure half-flooded, with obvious signs of recently-dug-out caves and chambers, and with vents that heat the water, making it positively cozy.

This is the home of the Moontide clan, a clan of mystics that dwell beneath the waves. A communal clan that lives by the creed of 'From each according to their ability, to each according to their need,' it has no strict hierarchy of leadership, decisions taken by the clan decided on as a group.

Members of the clan take up roles that they are best suited to. Oracles within the clan have learned from Maren such as its representative, Soren, how best to read the future without their deity's prophecies. Warriors keep hostile bands of marauders and Shade-touched creatures at bay. Cultivators tend to the clan's kelp beds and the trees that grow hesitantly within the magically-lit pockets of air. Wisdom-bearers consist of those physically unable to carry out such arduous tasks as fighting or farming, and who cannot see into the future; in other clans this may be seen as a mark of shame, but among the Moontide dragons, they are honored and revered just like any other, and those capable of it retain wisdom from ages and regale the youth with a rich oral history and with songs that sound clear through the water.

While these are the four main 'orders', others in this order act as teachers in another sense, knowledgeable in subjects such as natural science, languages of the beastclans, magic, swimming techniques and maneuvers. Others search for passions to follow, others are entirely dedicated to their growing families, and more still dedicate themselves to other parts of the clan's function; maintaining its facilities, preparing food for the clan, and more.

The Council

The Council is a gathering of trusted members
of every order; they collectively are allowed by
the clan to govern.

Those of this order have proven their worth,
either in their character and loyalty to their clan,
or in how they use their ability to protect it;
many of them are strong warriors as well, even if
that is not their primary role to the community.

This clan, while based in the sea and primarily of the water, is host to all sorts of creatures - not only visitors from other flights who represent them and their creed, as well as instructing young dragons who are born of those elements and who may find themselves lost in this environment, but to creatures of the deep and of magic, who either must be contained here for the safety of others or themselves, are honored guests, or are sheltered here, in hiding or in hibernation.

watershieldr.png

Not all of this clan have found the path that suits them; some civilians are left drifting in life, searching for their true passions, and some members of the clan are addled with love or the desire to breed and procreate, and are allowed to remain with their nests, lovers and families. Many civilians have hobbies or jobs of their own that do not fit neatly into the four stated orders - our hot springs caretaker may be both a cultivator and a wisdom-bearer, for instance.

Locations

Clan Moontide is sheltered in the upper cliffs of the Leviathan Trench which overlook the Spiral Keep, deep within the Sea of a Thousand Currents.

The clan resides within ruins from ages past, long-buried by the unsteady earth's movement upon the collapse of the World Pillar. It is an area that could be described as picturesque; surprisingly well-preserved, half of these ruins exist underwater, and the other half consists of air pockets, the entirety of the former temple only accessible through this cave system.
20119.png
entryway
The main entrance to the clan's lair is wreathed in life; corals and kelps ensconce it, and a banner with the symbol of their element stands proudly. There are other entrances, but those are more hidden and are often too small for most, only used by the clan's Maren population and the smallest of dragons.
33436.png
the tunnels
The tunnels consist both of natural and of dragon-and-maren-made passageways; throughout the clan's territory, they have been smoothed down so as to prevent errant scrapes on the delicate wings and fins of larger dragons. Carved into the stone are etchings that represent the history of the clan, marked with bioluminescent dyes so that they are visible even to those without any form of night vision. The tunnels come out all over the area so that dragons who know where they're hidden can make stealthy escapes or appearances, one even coming up all the way in the Driftwood Drag.
13582.png Outside of the clan lair proper, the gardens consist of forests of kelp and other greens which shelter sea urchins and other bottom-feeders and thus attract larger predators. It's a self-sustaining cycle which is overlooked by observant members of the clan. Within the lair, there exists a wing of the ruins which houses a sort of underground garden, half submerged, with plants one would normally only find in the shade of the Shadow flight territories and all sorts of herbs and insects to provide the occasional change in diet to those who are bored of seafood.
20118.png
the ruins
The ruins make up this clan's lair, while its territories sprawl outward through the tunnels and in the surrounding region of the deep. These ruins are vast, having likely been the home of thousands of ancient beings in an age past, and the architecture stands up surprisingly well. What hasn't persisted - some columns cracking, some statues intentionally broken in past conflicts - has been re-created by the clan's most enthusiastic Pearlcatchers, who wish to recapture the beauty of the past.
12738.png
the ruins - the penumbral pool
Within the deepest chamber of the ruins rests a basin, carved of solid stone directly from the floor; it's polished, able to retain water as effectively as any chalice, and was once a scrying pool for Shadow dragons, full of a mysterious murk that they would drink from for guidance and that would craze other dragons. Now that the cursed liquid has dried up, its guardian rests with this clan, having retired, and the oracles of the Water flight have filled it with sanctified waters to read the future themselves.
1050.png
the ruins - nesting grounds
A collapsed, flooded of the ruins dedicated to housing currently-brooding parents and their nests, together so that they may support each other during these times. The nests are in small hollows of soft, silty sand brought in exclusively for this purpose, and are framed with kelp so as to shelter them; the water is constantly cycling, and the hollows and frames prevent the eggs from drifting away.
38629.png
the ruins - clan hoard
Another of the deep chambers within the ruins; this room is half collapsed into the sea, its treasures piled throughout. Here there is gold, gems, for sure, but more than that, there are precious, beautiful shells, pearls, effigies, relics, dolls, and bolts of fabric. They are sorted quite thoroughly, by category, color, and so on, by a dragon who considers himself trustworthy and regal enough to do so.
21375.png Less a location, more of a feature; these vents were not there from the start, and were instead formed by the teamwork of the clan's Earth and Fire dragons. By channeling the power of the magma deep within Sornieth, they've created a heating system that makes the caves downright hospitable and giving them the potential to farm all sorts of edible critters.
23808.png Springs powered and supplied by the hydrothermal vents, rich with minerals and regularly cycled. The water is relaxing, soothing, and regularly scattered with crushed flower petals and other aromatics. With the water treated, many locals find them to be a relief for pains - soreness, joint pains, digestive issues, and so on. The hot springs are housed within a wing of the ruins lush with plantlife, the light dim and the entrance wreathed in hanging vines and flowers, and are run by a local Earth flight dragon.
23809.png Fresh springs that draw from a pressurized body of water below the Sea of a Thousand Currents. Completely clean and clear, these constantly-cycling pools are rejuvinating and healing, and are a favored location for both rest and play; environmentally-friendly soaps, oils for dragons' feathers and scales, and scale+horn polish are available here, as well as balms for external scars and wounds. These springs are run by a local Water flight dragon.
12197.png
wishing pool
A sanctified pool of water not for swimming, nor for drinking, but for imparting one's dearest wishes. It is overseen by a dragon imbued with the energy of the unknown cosmos and is rumored by some to house the spirits and the desires of water dragons past. Dragons come to meditate by this pool to channel their energy into the universe and to pay respects.
