Of those who walk this land, there are few who remember the lands they walked before. Fewer still who walked so long and far as she did. Departed from the tangle of her birthnest, nameless and purposeless, to follow the sun as it set and the stars as they fell. To wonder, with her bones yet growing and her claws sunk deep: where is it that the lights disappear to, when they dip beneath the earth? To wonder, with her eyes stung to weeping and her head ducked against the wind: is it someplace warmer than this one? And still, with her nose to the ground in search of rest, to wonder: will it swallow her just the same? A pause, then, just to breathe — and to find that, yes, it certainly would. In its own way. Never to go so far as the sun and stars, but to hear the call of something else. Beckoned by lights of a different kind, flickering and alive, and a chime that echoes on in that dark, sleeping space of her mind. The sound of something growing. Of many things. To wonder no longer– Or, at least, to wonder only at this yearning that’s rooted itself in her throat. Can you be homesick for a place you’ve not yet been to? Can you be lonely when you’ve never been anything but alone? To follow the lights. To tread ground that turns soft, and slick, and wet, to sink into it to her hocks. To carry onward, even when the lights begin to dance and scatter in directions she knows only to be wrong. To know, finally, as the mud turns to dirt turns to stone, that she is where she should be.
