in another time
As the dizzy, dreamy fog clears up, two picture-perfect scenes form in your mind.In one of them, a happy royal family of an imperial and a pearlcatcher lovingly embracing their heirs, together, as one. No power-hungry, controlling father; no trapped mother that has to live in fear for herself and her hatchlings; no eggs carried away in the dead of night.
In the other, two wildclaws playing with children of their own, carefree - they might have been through a lot together, but they've learned to accept the world as it is, both the good and the bad, the beautiful and the ugly. The light has nothing to latch onto in these dragons, has no power to eat away at their souls.
"Hey," Anders calls out lowly as to not alert any other potential creatures around them to their presence. He carefully steps around bones under his feet, while looking up at the wildclaw ahead of him examining their surroundings. "Don't go too far, you know we're not safe here if we're on our own."
"Tch, you don't have to tell me that," mutters Morrigan, annoyance clear in her tone, as she continues scanning the rotting, barren lands with her gaze, "I wasn't born yesterday."
Anders grew used to her mannerisms by now, so the wildclaw's tone no longer bothered him - she'd been through her fair share of things, that she had to fight and survive all on her own. He understands the way it toughens someone, even if he was a tad luckier than Morrigan.
"Then don't get so far ahead," the pearlcatcher mumbles, catching up to her, "Sensing anything?"
Morrigan's feathers twitch as her body tenses, long tail jerking to the side, eyes narrowing. "I can hear a few of these monsters close," she says, voice low, "Maybe about three, must be behind that big rocky ruby cluster. They probably think they got us cornered, pfft."
The wildclaw bares her teeth, "Let's get this over with." And with that, swiftly bolts into action, movements calculated and precise after so many battles she's been through again and again.
Anders follows suit, albeit nowhere nearly as seasoned of a fighter as Morrigan, but he's gotten good enough at using his magic to be helful in their survival in these plague wastelands. She doesn't really rely on him however, considering the pearlcatcher more of a nuisance, thinking him too soft. She isn't wrong, and Anders knows he'll probably never fully get used to this. But there's no point to let his mind wander to what ifs, so he focuses on the battle, avoiding one of the beasts' attacks and casting an ice spell back at it.
In another time, in some other world, maybe they would have been lucky. But right now, they were content with skill.
