An odd duck even by her species' standard, Wake's surely-sour song has never been proven. She serenades the storm, and celebrates it during, shyly grateful for the hissing modesty of heavy rains. Her many-faceted eyes catch static and hum with imminent energy, even in sleep, and must be weekly discharged. (A fine fracture in her left eye illustrates the risks of bottling it all up.) Storms are inevitable, it seems; she and they wake together.


"Sourpuffs are a minuscule breed of fae-ridgeback with beak-like, bony protrusions. Even the female ridgebacks have this tool for tree-pecking-- and defense. They compete with sweet- and ragepuffs and are mostly seen as witless pests and ill omens. A colony of sourpuffs can sour an entire forest's worth of song with the indignant shrieks of its native residents, but no one has ever heard the sourpuff's defense."
