Biography
Sand-Strikers are... an oddity. The main two casts tend to disregard this group as Sand-Snakes all together and dub them as outcasts on account of their lackluster appearances; Strikers lack the stone mimicry that the other castes have but are still connected to the subspecies due to their serpentine traits. Some challenge their clan elders to be seen as true Sand-Snakes while others are simply glad to have a space alongside their distantly related kin.
They are mild-mannered and prefer to take up weapons rather than use their fangs. Strikers can be found lingering just about any clan, taking up whatever roles are needed.
sub-species traits
Sand-Snakes, while capable of flight like most dragons, despise flying and find the experience to be nauseating. They however will take to the skies in the case of an emergency but they find themselves much happier when touching the ground. Their wings serve mostly as shade, aid in camouflaging into the land, and a deterrent towards larger enemies.
Much like Mirrors, Sand-Snakes have heat pits that they use in everyday life. They are located on the muzzle, snout, and/or cheek areas and serve as an aid in detecting prey and other dragons.
Sand-Snakes, as their name implies, are very serpentine and reptilian dragons that resemble their titular animal. They are almost always born with a handful of traits- fangs, venom, tail rattles, and a scaled hide- but said traits can be “mixed and matched” in each generation of dragons, with some gaining new fluke mutations and others missing a few (or all). While they mostly mimic snakes it is not all that uncommon to see ones that resemble iguanids, geckos, and even gators.
Sand-Snake venom is, for the most part, a paralyzer used to immobilize prey rather than finish it off. The properties of the venom itself varies from caste to caste, with some being extremely painful to those that come into contact with it and others experiencing hallucinations- it’s certainly not a thing to be trifled with. While the symptoms onset within minutes they will fade in very few hours. Sand-Snakes are (usually) mostly resistant to their own venom and experience an annoying pins and needles sensation instead of paralysis, but despite this fact, as a sign of trust Sand-Snakes will nuzzle each other in greeting as a promise that they will not bite one another.
There are rumors of weapons made from the scales of the original progenitor Sand-Snakes… things stolen, sharpened, refined into small blades and daggers that can slice through anything. It’s a very morbid thing to most clans though and they’ll give you funny looks if you ask about shed scales as shed scales are considered as things to be discarded. Perhaps it’s part of the reason why cutting flesh with tools is considered taboo towards the older clans- who knows?
Pastel: The standard. It’s widely agreed upon that paler eyes are a result of an egg getting a heftier exposure to sunlight, and thus the same reason why the dragons that spend their life in the dark tend to have equally dark eyes.
