Biography
It was hard, not to be loved by one's mate. It had been a pairing of convenience, true; Yaazani had been possessed of a land-grant to a dangerous, miry corner of the Shrieking Wilds, and Beth of ambition and greed both. But Ani had always assumed that, with time, would come love. Instead, what he found was a mate who was indifferent, children who were destined for the gods alone, and a clan that moved entirely without his input or influence.
At first he tried to make himself lovely for her: changing his clothing, his colors, his marks. When appearance seemed to fail, he tried personality: bringing her gold (well, goldenrod), trying a few battles, putting his claw in at raising the youngsters. And then he learned about Rokin - mysterious, dark Rokin, with his troubled past and his misery hung like an alluring cloak over his shoulders. Ah, Ani thought to himself. There is nothing left for me here.
So he stopped trying to woo her, win her, impress her. He changed his colors to suit himself. He started spending time in the clan, particularly with the refugees, and began to build for himself a life that he liked. Being a mirror did not suit him, and he changed that, too, so he could slink through branches and the hollow boles in the trees. He made himself into the dragon he wanted to be, and made a place with it. Beth could dislike him, he decided, and moon over Rokin and her piles of gold and amber, if that was what she preferred. He had the rocks, and trees; the moonbeams through the leaves. This was his place, and he would love it instead.
Yaazani collects small plants. He keeps his gardens high in the trees, in old hollows filled with loam and leaves.
