Aziraphale was the original angelic owner of the flaming sword, and was meant to use it to guard the eastern entrance to the Garden of Paradise.

A lot has happened since then and Aziraphale currently runs a bookshop (where only under duress is anyone actually allowed to buy any books) and is an expert on books of prophecy.
