"Take To The Sky"

Deep purple eyes gazed into dark waters, watching the stars reflecting in the waves. Lost in thought, he remembered his father telling stories of distant shores, of pirates and storms, the world where sea meets land. Then his mother, spinning tales of the deep ocean, finding treasure among ship wreckage and banishing the Shade from the coldest of flooded caverns. Despite this history of water-bound adventures, he was conflicted. During swimming lessons with his siblings, he never felt that connection his mother said they should feel, the call to swim, to dive and seek, yet he also never felt the longing to sail and explore above the waves as his father had done. There was just something missing that he couldn't explain, that made him feel distant from his family. Maybe if he stared into the water long enough, the answer would jump out at him...

The answer did not jump out at him. What did, was a flying fish. It flew right past his face, smacking his snout with its tail as it did, surprising him out of his brooding trance. He glared at the intrusion flopping on the ground, just barely containing a snarl as it flopped its way back into the water. With a huff, he leaned his neck up to look at the sky instead- and that's when he saw it. There was something impossibly dark moving through the sky, blocking the light. It was just one little instance at first, could have been mistaken for a dragon on a late night flight- until there came another. More still moved in from the edges of his vision, swirling, swarming in the sky, a pitch black writhing mass, and all at once he realized what it was. Simply the knowledge that this was the Shade made his fur bristle and limbs stiffen, mind going blank to everything except instincts. Hunt, capture, contain.

His body took over as if he was trained, yet what he was actually doing would be considered quite unexpected among other Gaolers. Thick claws dug into the bark of a nearby tree, great effort being taken to hoist himself up the trunk, wings flapping feebly to maintain some semblance of balance. The first tree was nowhere near tall enough, so after a quick scan, he lept to another one, causing it to shake furiously while never losing his foothold. Tree after tree, he climbed higher, eyes always glancing back to the swarm of jet black nightmares. Even as dark as the night was, he could see them more clearly from up here, jaws snapping, finally hearing the quiet unnatural hiss, almost like they were laughing; mocking his attempts to be something he is not. Still he persisted, until he stood at the top of the tallest tree he could reach, mind racing with plans, strategy.

Time seemed to freeze as his mind produced a thought that no Gaoler should have; fly. Up here, with the wind picking up and filling his lungs, it seemed to click into place, his wings stretching as far as they could reach. The leaves and weak branches trembled under his weight as he crouched down, too many thoughts running through his head to focus on any one. Why did he want to fly? What made this his dream? Would he even be able to make it? No time to worry, he forced those questions into the background, Shadow eyes burning with a newfound determination. Then with a single firm push, he launched himself into the air, finally catching the full attention of the Shade. Try as he might, his wings flapping hard enough to pull a muscle, he couldn't keep himself airborne, but the thrust of his jump was just enough to get him close to the creatures. With a solid bite, he latched onto one of the Shade on the very edges of the swirling mass, its screech piercing as he fell with it, and the rest chasing after.

The water was hard as he splashed down, but at least it muffled the shrieks of the dark serpent in his mouth. He dove deeper, swimming as fast and as far as he could, acutely aware of the rest of these things following close behind and uncertain as to what he was meant to do now- though an unexpected secondary splash made him turn his head. His mother in all her glory, runes glowing with fury, started swimming towards the Shade that was coming after him. Powerful jaws clamped down around a sizeable chunk of them, furiously writhing between her teeth, yet she never let up. His more water-inclined sister soon jumped in as well, grinning from horn to horn as she rapidily swam after the few trying to get away. After shaking off the surprise of his family joining the hunt, he quickly swam to the surface, the high pitched squeals resuming.

Both of his other family members were standing on the shore, his other sister looking at him with a secret-hiding smirk, their father standing tall and sturdy as a statue. The other two came back up not long after, both wielding mouthfuls of squirming Shade, their mother nodding in signal. With a deep breath, their parents focused their separate and distinct magick into making the beasts cold, so very cold, until they slowed their movement, going limp in their jaws. All three carefully released them into the water, where they were quickly encased in ice, leading to a deafening silence once the shrieks quieted down. So many hunks of various sizes, streaked through with inky black, eyes full of hatred glaring through. It sent a shiver down his spine while the rest convened on the shore, discussing how they'd gather them up, preparing to deliver them to the Fortress.

It was nearly the next morning when they were all gathered, still firmly frozen, and loaded up into pouches strapped to his mother's sides. As much as her sea-inclined daughter wished to come with her, she insisted on going alone, knowing how dangerous the journey could be. She bid her family farewell and dove into the water, starting the long swim back to the Southern Icefield. While his sisters went off, bickering and bragging amongst themselves, he stood on the shore with his father, watching the horizon slowly fade into a lighter blue. Memories of what he'd done the night before came back, bringing with it the one true question he hadn't been able to focus on; why? His wings were made for digging or fighting, not for flight. So why had he jumped like that? Why did he even attempt it?

VwNzJWZ.png

"Think any louder and I'll be able to read your thoughts." His racing mind was interrupted by his dad, not pausing to let him catch up. "Your sister was in her little crow's nest last night, and was the one to inform me of what you were doing. I don't have much time until the sun comes up, but I'd like to know what's on your mind." He gave his son the soft knowing smile of a parent ready to listen to whatever his hatchling has to say. It took a moment, but he breathed in, and looked out at the clouds.

"I think... I want to learn how to fly."
