Origins and Development

Deep in the Snowsquall Tundra of Sorneith, dense evergreen forests huddle around mountain ridges. In these freezing conditions, groups of dragons gradually adapted for life in boreal forests. The Modern breeds of this subspecies developed thicker fur to insulate against the cold, and the Gaolers were able to thrive in the snowy environment due to their thick, fluffy coats. The coats over time developed to include hues of green to blend in to the evergreen trees, and developed white patches and scales to further mimic the snow-covered boughs of the woods. Some dragons have such well-insulated fur that they can support actual snow drifts on their bodies without becoming cold or the snow melting.

Social

Personality-wise, Boreal Forest Dragons are often aloof and independent, but have a strong bond with their family members. Although they're independent, they are not opposed to strangers. They respect dragons traveling from other parts of the world, and will often have a den chamber lined with furs and other soft bedding materials to host visitors and keep them safe from cold's harm.

Most live in small family groups, typically consisting of a mated pair and their offspring. New couples will carve out deep dens in the summer when the ground is softest in order to raise hatchlings. Because the forests tend to be so cold, the parents take turns incubating the eggs. The eggs are constantly surrounded by a parents' fur, and if they weren't, the eggs would soon freeze. However, within an hour after hatching, the babies' coats are fully dried, and they can survive adventuring out the den to temperatures as low as -54°C/-65°F.

Their diets often consist of mammals and sometimes birds, as they're often the most readily available types of prey. However, some dragons have adapted to consuming different parts of the conifer trees, such as bark and sap, as well as different plant materials such as lichens and summer grasses and berries.
