No one knew when, specifically, Lupan began wearing her blindfold. No one wanted to ask. It wasn’t the kind of topic one could ever comfortably bring up around her, especially when she got into one of her moods. Her fellow clan mates, while… admirable, she supposed, were not as slick as they thought. Lupan willingly wore her blindfold for one specific reason, crushed and squeezed and warped out of agony and pure terror, but she was not deaf. In her opinion, it was quite laughable how much her clan mates felt they could get away with when one of their kin was different in one way or another. Of course, this was all good fun and never meant to seriously upset her, they just wanted the best for her and were trying to figure out a way to help her ‘break out of her shell’, but… she never asked to be broken out. What if it was safe here? What if it was safe where nothing could be seen? What if when the day finally came that Lupan grew bold enough to reach a massive paw up and tug off her blindfold, she became so overwhelmed and horrified by her surroundings that she never functioned again? What if, she thought on those darkest days, usually when the nights grew long and there was no warmth to be found in the soft moss of her bedding, it was the same as before? Unwillingly, Lupan had admitted to herself a few months ago that she was not okay. To be haunted so severely by something in the past that it permanently affected the way she went about living day-to-day could hardly be seen as being in a tip-top, mentally healthy condition. She faced that realization in the dark, as she always did, and did not attempt to find light in the quiet understanding of her clan. How could they understand? They would look at her differently if she ever even attempted to speak about what had happened to her - she would no longer be the muscle, the strongest and most fearsome of all the clan, the one to get things done and the one people could turn to if they ever needed sharp jaws and raking claws. Lupan would be weak. She would be nothing again, and she absolutely couldn't stand the thought of that, let alone what might actually happen if she tried. | _________ |
