The ancient Oracle drove himself upwards through the water, his body protesting the loss of the pressure it had grown so accustomed to over the years. As his head neared the surface he slowed, angling towards the shoreline and skimming just beneath the surface as he swam, his massive wings driving him forwards at an incredible pace. As the water grew shallower he pulled his wings in, paddling along until his talons scraped stone, scratching for a good grip for long moments before he heaved himself upright out of the water. He held himself unsteadily there for a few long moments as he allowed the water to drain from his gills and lungs, taking the first few breaths of air he had breathed in what felt like an eternity.

After a few moments he blinked his eyes open, squinting in the near-blinding sunlight, so different from the depths he was accustomed to. His eyes focused just in time to see a much younger Skydancer hurrying towards him. She was making as if to assist the elder Guardian as he adjusted to walking on muscles more built for swimming now, but Baphomet waved her off with a wing. He tested his weight as he pulled himself to his full height, looking down at the Skydancer, who dipped her head respectfully.

“How does the surface fare?” Baphomet’s voice rumbled, raspy from disuse.

“N-Not well, elder.” The Skydancer's soft voice replied, her plumage drooping slightly. “Many are injured or worse, many more are missing. A number of the coastal lairs are either entirely destroyed or immensely damaged. And the prophecies-“

“Are silent. Yes, I know. The Tidecaller is truly gone, child, or we would not have come.” Baphomet had no room for soft words of sympathy around the torrent of aching in his chest, the immense feeling of loss and grief. He had had a purpose. Now, that was gone. He forced the feelings aside, refocusing on the fidgeting Skydancer. “The Deep Seers are surfacing, child. All of us. We have come to lead the clans in the Tidelord’s absence until such a time as he returns. Have the others arrived?”

The slender Skydancer nodded, flicking an arm slightly to the side of where Baphomet was standing. “Not all have taken to the transition back to the surface as well as you have.” She said, and Baphomet swung his great head around to look.

In the direction she had pointed out, he watched as an ancient Ridgeback of impressive size was struggling to keep his feet, assisted by what appeared to be a fledgling Imperial and being fussed over by a small flock of Fae. The Ridgeback’s spines were home to an impressive array of sea life, trailing ribbons of seaweed and barnacles dragging their weight on the surface as they had not in the water. Baphomet gave a nod of acknowledgment.

“It will take some time, to be sure. But our wisdom and power are needed here now, at the surface, to guide the younger clans in this dark time.”

“Remember Baphomet. News of the Tidelords disappearance must-”

“Must not leave our borders. I am aware Anahita I was one of the councillors who proposed the secrecy.” Baphomet rumbled, his irritation welling over at his diminutive Pearlcatcher assistant who had been pestering him about his new duties almost daily before his departure.

“Yes I know you know but I want to be triply sure you remember. Should the other flights find out our weakened state there is a chance they make a move for our territory-”

“ENOUGH.” He snapped at her, lifting his wings. “I must be off or I will miss the morning winds, and my journey will take twice the time. I will not be late to my duties as a diplomat because you could not stop scolding me like a hatchling. Need I remind you that I was reading prophecies long before you were even an egg?”

She shrank back slightly from his anger, looking down to adjust the pearl she had safely tucked into a satchel at her side. “No. I just worry, Baphomet. For us all.”

His expression softened. “As do I. But we will preserve. We have until now, and it has been years.” His voice echoed hollowly at that admission, at the hopelessness starting to creep in. Had the Tidelord truly abandoned his children?

He shook the thought away as he gathered his travel pack, lifting his wings again and feeling the morning winds off the sea catch them, stretching the membranes taught. The wind alone was not enough to carry the Guardian’s bulk into the sky. “I will send message by courier when I arrive.” Was the closest thing to a farewell his words would allow, before he tensed and launched himself skyward, forcing his mass higher and higher with each mighty sweep of his wings. It had been some time since he had flown so high or far, but he had grown more accustomed to the air again over his years on the surface, tending to the needs of his clans. He circled over the ocean once more, before turning his head resolutely toward the crystals piercing the sky in the distance.

His trip was shorter than expected, helped along by unexpected westerly winds as he soared just ahead of the gathering storm on the horizon behind him. As he neared the Starwood Strand a small, excitable little Fae rode up out of the treetops to meet him, introducing herself in customary monotone as Hypatia, the overseer of the Embassy of her clan, and stating that she would guide him to it. Her scales were a deep black and glittered like a thousand stars as she moved, her primal Arcane eyes and small ensemble of bright blue firefly followers the only colour to be seen, outside of the handful of glittering starsilks she wore. It would have been easy to lose her in the expanse of the Starwood had he not once dwelled in the depths of the Leviathan Trench.

As the sun set and the Starwood truly came to life, the trees shimmering like a galaxy, Baphomet felt himself relaxing in a way he had not since he surfaced three years ago. It was strangely calming, amidst the dark trees with glittering blossoms. It was familiar in a way nothing else about the Arcane lands were - it felt like the deep sea he was accustomed to, with its bioluminescent algae and fish. His mood brightened slightly... perhaps he could come to enjoy his time here.
