Shade

Darkened eyes peered from beneath the large, brimmed hat, an old leather-bound book spread out on the small table in front of him. His claws traced each word as he read, diligently burning the midnight oil and keeping up with his studies. Every small creak as the floor settled set him on edge, but he focused instead on the words in front of him. He closed his eyes, repeating the spell over and over in his mind before stepping back from the book. His arms raised; eyes cast upwards to the ceiling as he focused. His lips muttered the words, waiting in the stillness for the desired outcome. Moments passed, silence aside from the creaking of the old wood as wind pushed against the house angrily. Memories flooding back with each noise, anger bubbling inside of him. Once again, his arms reached towards the sky and he spoke the words forcefully into the void. A beautiful light enveloped him, creating a barrier between him and the world around him. The spell had worked, and he finally felt a sense of comfort creeping back into his tired bones.
