Biography

Headcanons: Sornieth Geography & Geology
UA8l7xX.png
- The World Map is heavily stylized, showing major landmarks as much larger than they actually are.
- The oldest rocks on Sornieth are found in Dragonhome, a region which is also particularly rich in fossils. Its canyons expose a magnificent layer cake of sedimentary formations stretching back millions of years.

Greatwyrm's Breach is Sornieth's equivalent of cities like Rome and Jerusalem - half the time, new lair expansions end up accidentally tunneling into structures dating back thousands of years. You can hardly break ground for a garden without turning up artifacts. Other cities in Dragonhome have the same mixed blessing to varying degrees.

- The Scarred Wasteland is a single colossal, sessile organism. It has a variety of symbiotic flora and fauna found nowhere else. Plague clans build their lairs inside it and gather a wide range of useful materials from it. (Don't think too closely about why healing potions are red and yellow.)
Some say that the Wasteland is the true body of the Plaguebringer, and that her draconic form is merely an avatar.

The rivers that flow out of Plague territory are rich in nutrients, but heavily contaminated with a myriad of pathogens. Where they meet the ocean, they create huge algal blooms, which can create red tides, killing off countless sea creatures. Folktales refer to these events as "Mother's Blood", and some Plague dragons will ritually anoint themselves with the contaminated water.

- The Viridian Labyrinth is similar, except that it consists of a gigantic clonal colony of trees, of which the Behemoth is merely the largest and oldest. Many of the animals that live in this rainforest spend their entire lives in the trees, never making contact with the ground.

Much of what appears to be solid ground from a distance is actually more akin to a hyper-dense mangrove swamp - the plant growth has physically expanded Nature flight's territory over the centuries.
- The Ashfall Waste is dotted with volcanic pipes, some of which stretch down for kilometers into Sornieth's surface. They're a primary source for the various gems used as currency. Dragons who care more about adventure and profit than their personal safety will often venture down into them in search of diamonds. (The surplus digging supplies left over from Dustcarve Dig mainly went towards these excavations.)

The region is also known for its hot springs, which many dragons believe have healing properties. Much of the local biodiversity is in the form of colorful mats of bacteria at the bottom of the pools - there's a whole ecosystem of chemosynthetic extremophiles down there.

The areas not covered by fresh lava flows are exceptionally lush and green, thanks to the volcanic activity adding minerals to the soil. The local plants have adapted to quickly re-colonize land that's been covered by eruptions as soon as the lava turns to rock.

Near the border with the Shifting Expanse, the dry, windy weather combines with the periodic ashfalls to create nightmarish dust storms. Even the largest and strongest dragons can be killed by being caught out in one without protective gear.
- During the winter, it's possible to walk across the Frigid Floes to the Southern Icefield from the mainland. In warmer weather, the ice is diminished, so it's a long flight by wing or a dangerous sea crossing.
