Then
Muriel was hatched in secret in the frigid waters south of the Starfall Isles. Her and her two siblings stayed with their parents among a clan in the Southern Ice Fields, but had to keep out of sight of others. When asked why they had to hide, her mother never had a good answer. Then, the day came that she found out.
Her youngest sister, a curious pearlcatcher with an infectious laugh, took the risk to bound outside the den. Truthfully, all of the hatchlings had poked out a bit here and there. But, this time, Xanthia didn't come home. Before Muriel could worry, her parents rushed into the den and started grabbing their things in great haste. "Where's Xanthia?" she'd pleaded when they were pulled outside and across the snow. "We have to move," was all her mother replied.
The two adolescents were tossed into the ocean and urged to hide. They did, for a moment. Racing hearts got the better of them and they broke the surface just enough to look. Just enough to watch their parents being dragged away by several members of the clan. As they pleaded and resisted, the only words Muriel made out from the abductors were "for the Icewarden."
For a time, the siblings stayed in the waters around the frigid floes. Then, eventually, they realized they were on their own. Muriel and her brother, now just barely adults, couldn't agree on where they should ultimately go, so they parted ways. He headed east and she headed north, to the Starfall Isles.
The warmer, more colorful waters of the Isles was a much needed retreat from the pale memories that haunted her. Muriel couldn't stay alone with her thoughts, though, and sought her place among other dragons on the land. Through the years she made her way from assistant, to student at the mage academy, to an apprentice to a respectable mage. She wielded great power of the water and this gift is what landed her the role her master thought suited her best.
Now
At the end of her apprenticeship, Muriel was "gifted" to a place that had great need of her skills. The up-and-coming Kingdom of Alzada'al had petitioned the local mage guild for a water mage. Up, high in the sky, the floating island of Alzada'al's residents needed a closer water source. A water source on their island that Muriel would create.
She had shaped water for fun or for training many a times, but she had never attempted this heruclean task before. Yet, when she landed on the island, she felt something odd. Maybe it was the influence of the Spellshard, but Muriel could feel her clawtips itching like her mana was just ready to burst out. Instead, at her command, a gushing deluge sprouted from her claws and filled the great hole dug for this purpose. But, a simple lake wouldn't suffice. Without even being asked, Muriel continued her work. She wound rivers from the lake across the land that flowed right off the surface of the island. Nearly unable to control her burgeoned power, she embued the lake with more. More. More, until it was alive on it's own. The blessed lake pulled from an eternal water source and eventually fed off and back into the waters below the island.
