Ilias has had a tumultuous start to his life. Born to a deeply religious and strict clan who believed that deprivation and obedience was the way to win the favours of the deities, the naturally passionate Ilias chafed against this upbringing, always yearning to express the emotions that would bubble out of him, to share his passions and joys, to be warm and loving and joyful.
Eventually, not even fully grown but unable to bear it any longer, he ran. Happily, he ran straight into Dorinta, a gentle old Guardian, who promptly adopted him as her Charge; she had been in drawn to the area during her search, had taken notice of how ill-suited Ilias was to his community, and was ready and waiting for him when he made the decision to leave.
Dorinta was good for Ilias. Here was someone who, for the first time, was able to validate his emotions, to reassure him that it was in no way unnatural to feel so strongly, to be expressive and vibrant. Accepted into her clan and family, Ilias thrived under her tuition, and began learning elemental magic from both her and her clan mates. He was, for the first time in his life, wholly and completely content.
But this happiness was not to last. Dorinta and much of the clan lost their lives during a vicious Beastclan attack, and Ilias was forced to flee from his life, his great Guardian mentor sacrificing herself to give him time to escape. Heartbroken, Ilias took to wandering, trying his hardest to live up to Dorinta's philosophy of passion and emotion, teaching others of the same.
Ilias met Sascha during a springtime celebration held by the Nature clan Ilias was currently staying with, meant to see out the winter and bring in new life. Well, it brought new life for both of them - in Sascha, Ilias had found someone to end his wandering, to find contentment for the first time since Dorinta's death. The two set out on their own, setting up a home in the green, mountainous terrain that laid between Dragonhome and the Viridian Labyrinth, settling in, hosting a stream of visitors (much to the introverted Sascha's chagrin, at times), and tending to shrines to the deities.
It was not to last.
The years they had spent together had not necessarily been easy - Sascha still held trauma from their experiences with the Steadfast - but they had been peaceful enough. The arrival of the preserved body of an ancient Wildclaw changed this, rapidly. With Sascha charged to safekeep it, but both they and Ilias deeply and instinctively afraid of the body without knowing why, the pair began to investigate, roaming the Viridian Labyrinth in search of answers.
Ilias remembers this much: while visiting a clan deep in the Labyrinth, he had approached a shrine with a great tree at the end, filled with a presence that left him dizzy and breathless - a branch of the Behemoth itself. He had settled at the bole of the tree, rested his head against the bark, closed his eyes and reached.
And then he was emerging from its roots, disoriented and trembling like a new hatchling, bare of his silks and jewellery and staring up at a bright, clear sky where only seconds earlier it had been heavily overcast.
It was only later that he learned how many years had passed since he had first approached the tree. Only later that he had learned that Ilias had, indeed, risen from the shrine and returned to Sascha. Only later that he had learned that the ancient Wildclaw was none other than the preserved form of the Dracon, most beloved of the Gladekeeper, now corrupted with the Shade; that the Shade had taken possession of Sascha and had ended Ilias' life.
But the Gladekeeper, the presence Ilias had felt so strongly in the god-tree, had yet to give up on him. She had remembered Ilias from his encounter with Her tree, years earlier; now, She would recreate him. Slowly, tentatively, Ilias began to reconnect with the rest of the world, the rest of Sornieth, encountering Beckett, an explorer and historian familiar with Sascha and learning more of what had happened to his love.
And when Sascha found themself abruptly free from that Shade-taint, Ilias was one of the first to welcome them back to life.
Now, they are starting again. Sascha is deeply traumatised from their experience with the Shade, and Ilias still feels a stranger, sometimes, his true self long dead and his current form only a memory of his former self. Still, they are working it out - slowly, bit by bit, but together.
