 Only a hatchling, Skipper sank deeper and deeper into the depths of the ocean. The shimmering beast which he had exchanged glances with had not left him without a mark of its presence. Kharukios, a creature who had lost himself to the glacial chill of the southern icefield, had stood before him, as an unwavering embodiment of both rage and calm, torment and loss, his hide pattered with the stars of the galaxy. Merely by accident, Skipper had looked into the radiant eyes of this beast and in exchange for it, the young gaoler found himself hurled up into the air and plunged beneath the surface of the icy sea. The shadows of the beast's splayed talons atop the cracked ice sheet taunted him as the cold crept deeper into Skipper's bones.

A bolt of lightning shattered the silence, and through his dissipating thoughts, he managed to weakly focus on the shrieking roar of a dragon approaching. Skipper was unable to move, for his brain had been so slowed that he could not command himself to move, nor was his body even capable of doing so as he had began to freeze.

Atop the cracked ice, above the dark sea, an imperial matching the star-speckled skin of Kharukios threw himself at the beast, who unleashed a bellow of defiance as he was pushed onto his back, exposing his belly. Before Kharukios was able to react, the imperial leapt into the sea, unfazed by the cold, and he grabbed Skipper by the mane. The gaoler was not conscious as he was heaved out of the sea. The imperial took off into the sky with him, and left Kharukios behind. The beast made no move to follow them.
