“My parents named me after these little lights in the Lightning Farm labs called Nixie tubes. They're used for tracking energy output to make sure power is directed correctly through the systems. Maybe it’s weird to keep that name while I’m in hiding because it’s so obviously Lightning, but it’s one of the few things that I’d actually miss.
I was an intern when they brought me onto the project, and I was totally starry-eyed and enamored by all the senior engineers and directors. I only got in because of this paper I’d published on Tribeam Lurkers– they wanted electrical engineering expertise with laser diodes, so it fit– well, that, and knowledge of simulations. Not really related fields, I know, but I’ve always been into that kind of stuff. Awfully convenient for them.
The research was on creating simulated terrain and projecting it using Lurker diodes. It was pretty weird, 'cause usually grants get funneled into power sources, or things that actually have the potential to be big earners, so I should have been more concerned or asked why… but I was so excited about the opportunity for, like, a promotion or something that I looked the other way.
Then they offered me a permanent position. That was when the papers started coming in. Serious nondisclosure stuff, top secret, that whole deal. They never gave me information on the full project, but I knew it was something big… something to do with the Source.
At this point, the Source isn’t a secret. Of course the Oculus found out when they messed with the sanctum– but the secret part was what they wanted to do with it after, y’know?
Most people are assuming it’s just some big reactor or the Stormcatcher trying to create more ‘children’. But I know. I know that it is so much worse than that.”
