Everyone - even those who have never seen her - know Luscinia as the Singer. Few know of the treasured souls she sings for.

So old it almost certainly keeps terrible time, these days, Luscinia appreciates the trace of her prior life.

DRONE tends the graves of his region of the Catacombs - likewise, Luscinia tends the dead in hers.

Like DRONE, Luscinia tends the gardens of fungi which are all, aside from Brangaine's Darkness-touched vines, that can grow so deep Below.

PERSONALITY

Very few even know Luscinia exists - but they can hear her, as soon as they step foot in the Deep Catacombs. Her warbling tunes unsettles and encourages interlopers to leave; if they do not, she runs them in circles with her eerie songs until they stumble, utterly lost, back to the entrance.

She knows better than anyone what can happen to those who delve too deep. While some few dragons have learned how to ignore her trickery, these are also, so far, dragons which also seek to fight back the Darkness.

For sake of new allies and, perhaps, people who can help DRONE, she might permit them occasional entry.

ABOUT

Only Luscinia knows when she descended from the far above, now long-ago world of Sornieth to what is now the Catacombs beneath the clan of Tethys. Few even know that she resides down there still - but she does. A kindly dragon, she descended in an attempt to guard the world from the Darkness-touched depths of that space, and though she failed in keeping out Victricensa, Zubeneschamali and Brangaine, she and DRONE have successfully kept away vast numbers more over the years - and have become very skilled at keeping the three interlopers in.

Luscinia is a singer. In many ways she is the singer, not a siren summoning close but a warning, warbling and eerie, keeping people away. DRONE had already dwelled below for many isolated years when she arrived, and she coaxed an alliance out of him - with each other's presence, they have not felt so terribly alone, even if DRONE has no Hive to call his own.

Luscinia's song is hypnotic, used with careful skill to warn people away, to lure people elsewhere, echoing down tunnel and passage to keep dragons safe from the depths and the depths safe from the dragons. Luscinia is unique, in a way. How she learned her song prevents the Darkness from affecting her, much as DRONE's Hivehood does him, and, thus guarded, they guard the rest well.

The clan above likes to believe it is the efforts of the Shadowguard, of fierce Flagella, even of Pleurisy and Pestilentia and Aureus, which keep them safe from whatever might seek to claw its way up from deep below.

Luscinia is glad they do not know it is her, guarding the lower levels of the catacombs, the last area the clan considers safely theirs. Most do not know she is there, keeping them from probing deeper - and that makes her ability to keep them back, to keep them safe, all that much stronger.

After all, hypnosis rarely works if one is both aware of it and guarding against it.

RELATIONSHIPS

Victricensa | Constant Foe

To say Luscinia and Victricensa dislike each other would be to understate the matter significantly. While Victricensa has great respect for the Nightingale, Luscinia refuses to have anything to do with her, Singing away the Darkness and rendering Victricensa powerless in her domain. Victricensa is only glad that, for all Luscinia's apparent friendship with the DRONE, the two have not attempted to take her own territory from her.

DRONE | Tentative Ally

The peace between these two is careful and cautious and born more than a little of Luscinia's innate ability with song. DRONE lost his capacity to sing with the aeons he's spent below, but Luscinia's singing has encouraged him to learn again, and helped pull him back from the mental brink he was approaching.

Brangaine | The Deep Vines

All Luscinia knows about Brangaine is that she descended before her, and that her strength, not unlike Luscinia's parents' and evidenced by her Branches, lies in the growth of plants. Luscinia is glad of her own magic: it is all which can ward back the Deep Vines.

Zubeneschamali | Hated Enemy

Too loyal to Victricensa to ever see sense, or ever even want to shuck the Darkness laced through her very essence at this point, Luscinia detests Zubeneschamali and does all she can to keep the Shadowed Hand of Victricensa away from any living dragons.
