B I O G R A P H Y

I had to find the passage back to the place I was before

______ Born into a noble family, Mary was destined to become queen from the moment she hatched. The kingdom of her birth was in the midst of a tumultuous time, the result of years of economic depression and the recent assimilation of a neighboring clan into the kingdom, and her hatching was seen as a beacon of hope for the land, a signal that the current period of hardship would soon be over. She took the throne as soon as she was old enough to make decisions on her own, and then, only a few years later, war broke out. A large clan situated on the border between the Tangled Wood and the Sunbeam Ruins had begun encroaching further into the Light domain and had conquered several other, smaller clans - both Light and Shadow - along the way, leading the fallen clans' neighbors and allies to declare war. Cunardia was one such clan, and young Mary bravely led her subjects into the conflict.

After several years, the intruders were finally beaten back and vanquished, leaving the region in peace once more. It was in this period that Cunardia began to prosper once again, finally emerging from the terrible struggles that had plagued the kingdom for so long. Mary appointed her younger sister Elizabeth to rule alongside her, and the two queens helped their kingdom to flourish for many years, although it didn't quite reach the soaring heights it had seen before the depression.

Everything changed, however, when Elizabeth failed to return from a diplomatic trip, leaving Mary once again the sole ruler of Cunardia. The kingdom waited, however, for its lost queen to return, and Mary refused to hold any sort of funeral, firmly believing that her sister was still alive. As time passed, however, she began to lose hope, and although she never showed her grief to the public her servants could see how lonely she really was.

Eventually, Mary's health began to fail; the stress of ruling and battling grief at the same time was beginning to take its toll on her. She barely ate and spent most of her time alone in her chambers or the palace library, only emerging from the palace for public events. Eventually her health got so bad she was forced to abdicate her throne - after all, a weak queen could easily lead to a weak nation, and she wanted only the best for her beloved Cunardia. She left the throne to her niece - Elizabeth's daughter - and stepped down, and then she left the kingdom to see if she could find her sister.

Her search didn't last long, as her weakened state led her to nearly die before she could even leave the Sunbeam Ruins. She was found by a small group of foragers from the Lanternlight Clan, however, and they took her in and allowed her to stay as long as she wanted. Mary opted not to return to Cunardia, as she liked the relative anonymity of her new home and, although it took some adjusting, enjoyed the simplicity of a commoner's life. This, it turned out, was a good call, as she was reunited with her sister only a few months later when she too found her way to the clan. Finally, after years of being apart, the two sisters were together once again.

INSPIRATION

______ Fandragon of RMS Queen Mary, one of the world's more well-known ocean liners. She's best known today for her role as a hotel and haunted attraction in Long Beach - a role in which she's changed owners several times and is in poor condition due to neglect by said owners - but, in her day, she was a popular liner and a successful troopship during WW2. As a matter of fact, she was the only one of the major transatlantic liners to make a profit during the Great Depression, and her great popularity lasted until the rise of widespread air travel rendered her obsolete, at which point she was withdrawn. Notably, she was the first liner to include a Jewish prayer room on board - a poignant statement for a ship that was built in late-1930s Europe.
