It wasn't a usual happenstance that Taiga received a visit from her mother. Perhaps it was only now that Taiga was curled in despair, wings folded over her body and claw-tipped paws over her eyes. For hours she had been lamenting, ashamed of herself. perhaps that is why the elder dragon emerged from the nests to console her daughter.
"Whatever is the matter, Taiga?" Taiga's mother asked, voice echoing off the walls of the cave chamber. Taiga responded with nothing but drawing in on herself. Taiga's mother sighed, settling next to the lamenting she-dragon. After a moment of silence, Taiga finally responded. "I look ... ugly." she murmured, voice muffled and wings shifting so that she could at least peek at her mother. The older she-dragon raised an eyebrow. "Whatever do you mean? You're as beautiful as they come," Taiga's mother said matter-of-factly. She stared right at Taiga, watching as she slowly unraveled herself. "And - and what about this?" the younger one finally unfurled her wings, a piebald pattern of white and red over her scales. At this, Taiga's mother laughed. "That? that is your family mark, Taiga. a symbol of our - your - lineage. Strong, capable dragons, Taiga. You have no reason to be ashamed of it." Taiga blinked slowly, her eyes moving to the pattern of her scales, before back at her mother. "Family mark? lineage?" "Of course! why else would most of the family bear the markings? You're not ugly. You should be honored of which you carry." Taiga thought about this for a moment. A mark to carry proudly, to show exactly who she had descended from ... yes, that was much better than feeling bad about it, wasn't it? She finally unfurled herself in her entirety, a small smile making its way on her face. "Family mark," Taiga repeated softly to the satisfied look on her mother's face. Perhaps bearing these patterns was not a burden after all. |
