"Was he one of yours?" VITIOSI asked, examined the worn-down bot in front of them. It had certainly already seen its best days. Its carapace was cracked, and many sections of the robot were smoky grey, burnt from some sort of overheating. Normally they wouldn't give it a second glance, but AEVIUS had been the one monitoring the drones, and insisted they bring it back to the Hive.

"Nah. And I don't think it's from anyone out of my group, either. It's not... the way it's built, it's all wrong. Like... like, okay. I don't think a dragon built it, is what I'm trying to say." SANCULIS finished, leaning his face into the mess of wires and robotic parts he had exposed by removing its back panel.

"Sorry- sorry, not the best at thinking and talking," He said, sitting back on his haunches and turning towards the pair of consciousnesses. "I reviewed the footage that the drones took, and I think that place was some sort of robotic encampment. Someone- or something- destroyed them. The ground was just littered with parts of robots. From what I could gather, the robots were building this one. They must have known about the Hive, and deemed it enough of a threat to make another robot to destroy it, or control it, or something. It has Hijacker subroutinues." SANCULIS mused, tilting his wrench.

"So, can you make it function again?" VITIOSI inquired, examining the robot's still body. It looked pretty broken to them.

"Yeah, probably. It's mind is still functional, actually, the battery is just out of juice. I think the dragons that attacked the camp set fire to it. The joints are all fused, and it couldn't escape or even recharge." SANCULIS replied, tapping his claws on the bot's head. "I could turn it on if you want."

"Do it." VITIOSI said, glancing over at AEVIUS. He noticed and nodded at them, approvingly. SANCULIS shrugged and leaned into the robot again with a small metal part in hand. After a couple moments, the bot slowly began to shift.

"W-W-W-W-W-" The robot glitched, in a slow, slurring voice. Its eye creaked open, bits of rust and metallic dust falling down its face. Its neck was still functional, and it reared back, making SANCULIS jump out of the way.

"Who... are you?" It asked, its voice starting to regain strength. VITIOSI blinked impassively back, silent.

"What... do you want? Where am I? Who are you?" It asked again, its voice starting to speed up. It started to struggle- or at least tried to, whipping its head side to side and shifting its shoulders. The rest of its body, fused together, didn't respond. To VITIOSI's surprise, it started to pant.

"Why is it panting? It doesn't need oxygen, does it?" VITIOSI asked, turning to SANCULIS. He shook his head, and shrugged.

"Likely programmed in as a sign of distress." He said simply. The robot began to panic in earnest, eyes as wide as its synthetic eyelids would let it go.

"LET ME GO! Where are- what have-" The robot cut itself off, clearly recieving data from its banks about the incident. It slowly stopped struggling, its neck going limp.

"They... they abandoned me." It said in a forlong voice, soft and empty. "They left me behind, and didn't- they-" It trailed off.

"This isn't helping. SANCULIS, turn it off." AEVIUS intoned from VITIOSI's side, voice flat as usual. SANCULIS glanced at VITIOSI for assent, which they gave, and approached the bot to turn it off. It didn't struggle, eyes empty.

"Wipe it, SANCULIS. See if you can't keep the Hijacker functions, though. And replace its carapace too. Model it off a drone, the other drones will be more open to accepting it that way." VITIOSI turned to AEVIUS, eyes bright. "Think we just found a solution to our "range" problem. Smart find."

HIJACKER

False consciousnesses meant to perform all the services of a consciousness while remaining subservient to a master. Originally created by dragonkind, the earliest hijackers were used to engage consciousnesses in mental battle and steal their drones, so that the hijacker could build a hive of their own for their master to command and use for their own devices. Whether the first hijackers were made to fight the hivemind or to further the goals of an individual with dubious morals remains unclear.
