my father told me that i never should worry
i broke that rule once i could think
i breathe far too quickly, i flinch at the noise, and i tear at the skin on my wings.

they say the future is bright, but i've seen enough
"best years of our lives" but the edges are rough
i catch feathers, falling right out of the sky
my old friends, now dead birds, that once thought they could fly

my mother clipped my wings so that i'd never fall
and now, see, i never learned to fly at all
my friends and i can glide at best
at least, the friends i have left

they say the future is bright, but i've seen enough
you tell me i should smile, but it's getting tough
brush off feathers that fell on me out of sky
on the street there's dead birds, that once thought they could fly

i keep bluejays in pictureframes, pictures from kindergarten
haven't had pictures lately, feels like we've been forgotten
my wings are mess and your feathers are gone
and i'm trying my best not to write you a song

there's no money in music, they joke that i'd starve
how is that different from the way that we are
now and then i look back, at the people we're missing
