The first king to take over after the fall of the Ancient king's line, Midgar had fallen into disease and poverty, and the rightful heir of the land had disappeared. Kultainen, a descendant of an old lord, displaced the lost heir. He took up the task of getting Midgar back to its old glory. Kultainen went to work stating his claim and rallying any old loyalists. He brought in a counselor, Sanguine, who advised him to solidify his claim. He set down a law that stated the Old King's line as illegitimate and strengthened his own. He also quickly took up a wife, Duchess Wisteria of Spiral Keep. He met her during his crowning celebration, and the two fell for each other. Most expected children from Wisteria next, but it was Sanguine who was the first to expand her family under Kultainen's rule. She had a son and two daughters, but she refused to speak of their father. During that time, Kultainen seemed unusually close to his aide, but none seemed to question it. Soon after, Wisteria brought the first of many children to Kultainen into the world. Kultainen was obsessed with growing his claim and influence; the easiest way for him was through his kin. He raised his many children to be either disciples or spouses to other lords/dukes under him. Many seemed more than happy to welcome any of the King's kin (and their gold accounts) into their families. Many of his children were sent to foreign kingdoms to spread more influence there. The kingdom of Midgar was very small in comparison to the large kingdoms around it, but it was at the center of the largest trade route. By this time in Kultainen's life, Donarula, the head of commerce in Midgar, had just begun establishing a reputation in trade. Midgar did not have many natural resources, so it relied on imported goods for its stock and trading. But soon after this, a massive plague took root in the Scarred Wasteland. Many dragons were infected and killed, including many of Kultainen's children. The plague is still an ongoing issue, but it is not in full effect. Many in the castle were forbidden outside access without rebreathers. Evidence of contamination is still present in survivors. There is a chance children born in the Scarred Wasteland will have a plagued parasite in their brain. One such case was one of Kultainen's earlier sons. The dragonnet hatched with grotesque features and a twisted mind. Surprisingly, the hatchling lived and was able to reach adulthood. However, in a fit of rage induced by the parasite, the dragon killed a member of the council and was subsequently exterminated. Later in his life, Kultainen decided to start thinking about his heir. Traditionally, it would be his oldest, but Kultainen was adamant against that. Instead, he chose to look to his kin still in the kingdom. His daughter, Opalus, was next in line, the only imperial child he had. Kultainen loved Opalus and gave her many spoils. Wisteria tried to instill knowledge of the kingdom into Opalus, but she was never interested. Once she came of age, Opalus refused the crown and passed it to Kultainen's much younger son, Foolsgold. The boy was not raised to expect much from his father, as he was one of the youngest of over 50. At this point, Kultainen was engrossed in warring with the beastclans in the Scarred Wasteland and was not around much. Foolsgold grew with the guidance of Sanguine, the Royal Aide, and the regulars at [Undecided]'s tavern. Foolsgold managed the kingdom under his mother during the Beastclans war. Upon his return, the tired and wounded Kultainen did not immediately do much. He never picked up all of his responsibilities again and became a lax king. |
