Biography

FRANKIE
6351.png6332.png Unfounded feelings of shame for not being his parents "desired outcome" in a breeding experiment compelled Frankie to learn magical ways of transformation and transfiguration. He sought to study alchemy and potions with the Serthis, and has now found real purpose with Baldwin and his Brew.

Somewhere in Dragonhome, deeply shaded by a great overhanging plate of sediment, a brooding Snapper stirred his bubbling cauldron, lost in thought. He stared into the brew and mumbled to himself, checking off ingredients and expected reactions to make sure the outcome of his experiment would be as free from error as possible.

“Hello, Frankie,” a sharp voice interrupted the Snapper’s concentration. He turned his head to find his mentor entering the dark space that could be called a room. The Serthis was visibly relieved to slither onto the cool dirt and weeds under the shade.

Turning back to his cauldron, Frankie asked what the elder alchemist wanted. “I’m a little busy right now, but if you need help with something we can make a schedule,” he said respectfully. There was a short silence, then Frankie heard the smooth shifting of sand and dirt as the elder approached him and he cringed in anticipation.

“I just came to check on you and your project, Frankie.” Frankie hated it when his master talked to him like that. Like some kind of beginning student. Like a Serthis child. The elder reached a green, scaly arm beside Frankie’s own and dipped a finger into the hot concoction. His nails were as radiantly green as Frankie’s own. The snake seemed slightly disappointed when he returned his finger and saw it was still intact. “I could tell from the color, this is supposed to be a potion strong enough to melt the Earthshaker’s hide from his bones. This barely dissolved my cuticles,” he wiped his finger with a cloth.

“It’s not done yet, obviously,” Frankie said with a glower, “I’ve still got to wait a little while for it to set, then I’ll check that it dissolves organic matter, then I’m going to add some maiden’s blush, a spotted grasshopper--”

“Listen, Frankie, I’ve been doing this for a while and I can tell this brew won’t work. Dump it out like the others, otherwise you’re wasting your time and my resources. And in the future, just go by the book. I gave you a Serthis recipe for a potent acid, something normally restricted to your kind, just use it and stop toying around with things you don’t understand,” the potionmaster gave a sigh and shook his head as he turned to leave, but was stopped when something heavy and purposeful slammed onto his tail.

“Stop talking to me like that!” Frankie’s mouth was tight and his face was filled with sharp lines, “I’m capable of doing my own research, there’s no point in me making something that I already know the outcome of. You call yourself a master, but you seem content with what you already know, what’s masterful about that?” The Serthis raised a finger and began to say something but Frankie cut him off, “You think I can’t do this-- no, you think I’ll never do this because I’m a dragon. No, even more than that, you think I can’t do this because I’m a Snapper. As if my physical appearance has anything to do with my ability to throw ingredients into a cauldron and use a big spoon. You call me your student but I never learn anything from you, all you give me are the answers! I have to go find each material’s properties by myself because you think I’m incapable of understanding their relations to one another,” Frankie raised his claw off of the elder’s tail and slammed it on the ground hard enough to shake various bottles around them. “But I am! I am capable! And I’m learning to be a great potionmaster, whether you help me or not.”

The elder Serthis looked at Frankie in astonishment at his outburst, then he frowned and nodded to behind the dragon. “Thanks for taking my advice to dump out the cauldron, make sure you clean up anything that’s left on the floor.” Frankie looked and saw that he had knocked the kettle over with his tail in his fit, its contents oozed across the ground and into the pit reserved for failed experiments. Tears welled in the Snapper’s furious eyes, he turned back and could barely make out the form of his master leaving the room. “Oh, and you should reconsider ever disrespecting me like that again if you want to keep this apprenticeship. Get started on your next brew.”

After a moment of self-pity, Frankie began pushing the slime into the pit with a broom. It was difficult at first, the outer edges of the broom kept getting caught on rocks and weeds, but the closer to the spill he got, the less resistance he encountered. Soon he was done, and he gave one last look at his work, lowered his head, and left to gather more ingredients for his next brew.

Although Frankie couldn’t see it through his tears, no weeds were left in the potion’s path.
