The doctor had said it was nothing to be overly concerned about. She said to keep Milan warm and fed with soup, gave him medicine and tea to prepare for the poor lad. She smiled and petted his arm, saying the fever was just a harmless cold, a side effect of a prank played on Milan not too long ago. It had been funny, to see the proud, young man drenched to the bone with sugar water and covered in feathers thrown from a balcony from above, yet all laughter had died in his throat when Milan’s skin had adopted an unhealthy glow by evening and the horrifyingly familiar pitch of heat in the night. “You’re worrying too much.”, words slurred together, tongue heavier than lead from fever and exhaustion and still Milan’s sharpness never went away fully. The young man looked at him, from between pillows and his cocoon of blankets, still flushed, still pale skinned, eyes shining in a glassy haze. Under his cold fingertips, Milan seemed to burn brighter than the eternal day outside their bedroom window. Tilting his head, he leaned into the touch, sweat soaked curls of auburn hair clinging to his cheeks, his forehead, brushed away by worried, gentle touch. “Hmmm, feels nice. Keep doing that.” “Do you get enjoyment out of seeing me frazzled and worried?”, it would be alright, the doctor had said it herself. And as he sat on the edge of the bed, he couldn’t help but think, but remember. That this was just like it used to. Him tending to a fever riddled, haze eaten husband while being relentlessly teased. Putting aside his glasses, he kicked off his heels, leaning against the frame of the bed as Milan spread more over him. His chest as a pillow for a heavy head, his arms the sole blanket the young man desired. “I was scared.” “‘tis gonna be alright, Lily.”, a silly pet name that never had sounded sweeter, running his ink stained hands through Milan’s locks felt like a comfort, felt safe. And the young man seemed to relax too, for a moment or two, it seemed like he was about to daze off. Until he tossed, from side to side, restless like a cat that couldn’t find the ideal spot to lay down. “Sure miss my dad’s lullaby now.” If it was just this Milan was missing, that he could provide. Closing dark golden eyes, he mused in the darkness behind his closed eyelids, tried to remember the tune, the lyrics he had learnt by pressing his lips against a grinning mouth. “Cruel and cold, like winds on the sea. Will you ever return to me? Hear my voice, sing with the tide. My love will never die.”, he could feel Milan’s gaze upon him, foggy, glassy, curious as the first shaky words came over his lips. Too long had he not sung for anyone, neither daughter nor son, it almost felt alien to him and yet, with each word his voice started to swell. To grow and color, regaining a confidence he had long deemed lost. “Play the song you sang long ago; and wherever the storm may blow you will find the key to my heart. We’ll never be apart.” His daughter had loved the song, his husband had taught it to him, now he gifted it to Milan so that he may find rest in between the fits of fever pitch and leaden limbs. Nuzzled against his chest, he held him safe, brushed away the dreams of delirium and poured his love into each word, each swell and rise a declaration of affection on its own. “Wild and strong, never bound nor ever chained.”, softening from a ferocious chorus, he lured sleep closer with sweetness in his voice, softer than satin, warmer than honey. “Cruel and cold, like winds on the sea.
