Khiris

"And once I have done what you ask, what will you do for me?"

tumblr_inline_o21bm9FwdX1r3lvtf_400.png

Khiris claims to primarily be a Healer and Alchemist, but anyone who gets a chance to look past the mask he wears will know that he tells only half the truth. He experiments with a variety of substances and creatures, nothing is spared his claws if it might provide some new knowledge. Appropriately, he has developed a variety of strains of disease, far more than any normal Necromancer might, and he keeps the secrets behind each locked within his own form, where only the most talented Infectionist might ferret out the secret. But that chance will never come, as he almost never leaves his labs, preferring to let his veritable army of Necroservi take care of anything outside that does not require his direct attention. For all his power and knowledge, Khiris has effectively no desire to climb the Council ranks, preferring to be left alone to do as he pleases. Nevertheless, such power is useful, and while he is usually happy to let the shadow of Fhiravu cover his actions, he is beginning to consider taking up a Council position himself.

Augury is not one of his skills. It is more his niece's thing, but in her absence and desperate for guidance, Khiris is not above trying. He reasons that it cannot be much different from his own experimentation, save the looking for portents part. If she were here, he wonders idly if Revahari would consider his attempts a form of sacrilege. But is this not a way to seek the Mother's guidance and interpret her will in times when it is needed?

The familiar is already long gone to disease when he starts poking around in its innards, looking more than interfering, trying to read how the illness progresses. It is slow, and he has only the most basic of idea how to do it, but he watches as the threads move together to pull their host down. He admits easily that it is intriguing to watch one of his designer sicknesses run its course, but he sees nothing within it that relates to the situation at hand, nothing providing a way forward or even reassurance that he has done the right thing.

He scoffs, more to himself at the absurdity of even trying, and draws the plague from the familiar and into himself to neutralize it and store it away. It is no use continuing if he is unable to read what might be there; better that the little beast might live to serve some other use that would actually bear results. When he turns, jaw clenched and mind racing trying to figure out what to do, he stops short at the sight that greets him.

Across the room, the skydancer on the makeshift cot next to his hastily-cleared desk stirs, bandaged limbs twitching discomfortingly as a pained hiss draws from a feathered head. Struck dumb by the movement, Khiris stands in the middle of his quarters gaping openly. She shouldn't be awake after exerting herself like that with such injuries, much less moving. And here he had been worried that she wasn't going to wake at all. Red-stained bandages shift once more with an accompanying low, frustrated growl and he finally jerks into action.

"You really shouldn't be moving yet. I'm surprised you're even awake after expending enough energy to vaporize three Lichs in that condition." He walks over and helps Fhiravu settle more comfortably, and all the while her eyes are squeezed shut with the difficulty of moving over-taxed limbs. "Though I admit it is reassuring. I was afraid you weren't going to make it for a while."

She huffs as she settles her wings and leans her head into the mattress. "You're not getting rid of me that easily." A blink, and then her gaze is fixed on him, pinning him in place. "It will take more than that to do away with me." Fhiravu frowns and raises her head once more once she sees his expression. "What?"

"Your eyes . . . they're glowing."

  • Primarily a Inculator and Healer, drawn to the outpost by word of mouth, and stayed to take advantage of her shadow. Khiris is powerful, though not a match for Fhiravu's might, and he had to work to convince her that he was not a threat, going so far as to take a mid-level familiar and swearing never to match or rise above her Council standing.
  • Does not regret throwing away the symbols of power, as he is more able to conduct his experiments in peace, unbothered. He keeps the outpost's records and occasionally performs favors for the other Necromancers or the clan itself, but is otherwise left to his own devices, as he prefers it.
  • Shares a lineage with several renowned Necromancers, but never speaks of or acknowledges it, preferring to be recognized for his own merits, obscure as they are. Takes advantage of the shadow Fhiravu casts over the Necromancers who follow her to conduct his affairs primarily in secret.
  • The only exception to his rule of privacy is Fhriavu, with whom he is required by his agreement with her to share the main points of his discoveries. It bothers him little, as she does not spread word of his less-than-savory activities or take credit for discoveries he makes.
  • He is the one who healed Fhiravu after she saved both the outpost and the clan, and was the first to know of the change of her eyes. He was nearly as ecstatic as she at the development, as her power and influence grow, so would his by simple association.
  • Due to the confidantory nature of their relationship, he has grown close to Fhiravu over the years, and has recently begun to consider if they might have a future together. He knows she one day desires to continue her line, and any children he might give her would benefit from his knowledge. At least, that is the argument he plans to present.
  • His claws are often stained with blood as a result of his experiments, the nature of which he does not voluntarily disclose, and most are too afraid to ask.
  • Disdains his niece Revahari as a disappointment. Despite her lineage, she does not rank highly, and is only doing as well as she is because she has ridden Fhiravu's coattails for most of her life. Finds it appropriate that she should be relegated to a missionary, one reliant on social graces instead of the Mother's power.
  • Knows that Yren is suspicious and distrustful of him, and respects it. He has no intention of doing anything along the lines that the other mirror fears, but he acknowledges that he is secretive and strange, Yren is only doing what makes sense. Which does not mean that he doesn't prank the other, of course.
