Endless Hunger
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Book of Urban Legends
Tales of Terror

“This isn’t how we wanted to die.
I’ll hold your hand as we pass.
I’ll be your light, and you, my candle.
And we’ll burn so brilliantly, my love.
We’ll burn so bright.”

The Blooming Siege
When the walls rotted.
They died so beautifully. They died, and it didn’t matter.
The warriors go for the throat. They strike with blades of steel and swords of thunder, they die in glory clad. We go for the heart, for the lungs, for the eyes, for the innards.
We skin the sinew, we purge the marrow and sear the nerves. They fought like warriors and we fought like the dead, the martyrs, the children encased in soot and night. They fight in wars of reckoning, of heroism and survival, they break themselves upon steel and glade and worthless honor.
They fought, because they were in love. We fought, because we were desperate. Because we were the last plaguebearers of a merciless god, what else could we have done?
We poisoned their wells, we crushed their nests and fouled their food. We stole their hatchlings in the dead of the night, we robbed their wares and slaughtered their merchants. We salted their fields and burned their medicines, we broke their shrines and tore the standards of their gods. We hurled plaguebourne corpses at their ranks, we built towers out of their dead’s bones to scale their defenses. And we spent decades - decades! - of the Blooming Siege watching them die slow, miserable deaths, wasting away in humiliation, blooming away in plague.
Night after night, of watching their last defenders succumb to the plague, their scales sloughing off of their flesh, their eyes hollow ruins caving in their skulls. We went after the weak, the helpless, in packs and in numbers. Lions overwhelm, lions slay, lions kill. Hyenas eat, hyenas hunt and hyenas devour. We went for the innards, for the veins and the blood and the weak, we devoured them one by one and dressed the infested remains in pretty rags to poison their very funerals.
When the Blooming Siege ended, there was no surrender. There was no peace accord. There was no final, glorious battle. There was only oblivion. When the gates opened, it opened upon a city of festering death. We pried the wooden gates open and were greeted with the scent of ripe, festering decay, the guards having died at their gates, the defenders having rotted clean away from their posts. They stood, slaughtered to the last, and we buried their bones beneath a layer of ash.
Plaguebearer forgive us. Plaguebearer rejoice for us. Plaguebearer…love us. We killed them. We killed them, slow, honorless, and humiliating, and they died a fate even less than the vermin.
We killed them. And it didn’t matter.
We killed them. And in the end, we still lost the war.
